oh is it .. the clip was uploaded today on youtube.. but doesn't say when it was aired ..

regardless on how old this is, if they currently have at least 600-800 daily passengers to Basra, it's already above my expectation, the impression that I got was that train services are close to being dead ..

he's (the ex-transport minister) talking nonsense, or something that happened for a brief period of time a few years ago. Nowadays the railway company had its line of credit withdrawn and that's the last I heard of it!

interesting..

What I find confusing is the fact they are constantly signing new railway agreements with neighbouring countries.. why is there this disconnect
for example, this article from few days ago:

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Iraq-Jordan railway agreement signed

AK News - 4 May 2011

The railway between Baghdad and Aqaba, Jordan, got one step closer to realization today, with the signing of a preliminary agreement between the governments of the two countries, the Iraqi Transport Ministry announced today.

The project, which the ministry hopes will strengthen commercial ties with Jordan, involves the construction of a connecting spur, 150 km long. The trains will travel up to speeds of 140 kilometers per hour.

Spokesperson for the General Railways Company, Jawad al Kharsan, told AKnews that the Jordanian delegation will today discuss the logistics for the completion of the railway.

He said: "It will be one the most important lines owned by Iraq. We are working on the Qaem-Syria line so that it reaches Traibil, then we can get on with building the Baghdad-Aqaba line

"The Jordanian side expressed its desire for the railway to pass through the border crossing at Traibil-Karama."

The Directorate of Railways has confirmed this month that its financial takings reached IQD1.6 billion in March. Iraq's Transport Ministry announced that the next round of railway licensing will be launched soon.

Iraq is looking to build an integrated transport network with countries in the region, to link the Mediterranean, the Arabic Gulf and East Asia.

Jordan and Iraq signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a rail line linking the Jordanian Red Sea port of Aqaba with the Iraqi capital of Baghdad, Petra said, citing Jordanian Transport Minister Muhannad Qudah.
The agreement for a line that would provide passenger and cargo services was signed by Qudah and visiting Iraqi Transport Minister Hadi al-Ameri in Amman today, the Jordanian official agency said. There were no further details on the project. Those will be decided later by a joint committee, Petra said.
Jordan has plans for a $3.1 billion rail network running 950 kilometers (590 miles) to connect the kingdom with Syria, Iraq and Saudi Arabia. The kingdom is due to start the first bids for the project by the end of June, Qudah said April 11.
Jordan’s government will provide 370 million dinars ($522 million) for the project and potential lenders include the World Bank, European Investment Bank, France’s state-run Agence Francaise de Developpement, the Islamic Development Bank, the Saudi Fund for Development, the Kuwaiti Fund for Arab Economic Development, the Kuwait-based Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation and Germany’s state-owned development bank KfW, he said.

Iraq Tenders Intl Railroad for Investment for Lack of Funds

Posted on 16 June 2011

The Iraqi Transport Ministry is planning to tender a railroad line links Iraq to several Asian countries through Iran for foreign investment for lack of funds.

The 200 km Mundhiriya-Qasr Shirin railway will link Iraq’s Baqouba city to Iran through the Mundhiriya border crossing, and from there to several other Asian countries including India and China.

Spokesman for the state-owned railway company Jawad al-Kharsan told AKnews that

“The company has completed all legal and technical work for the line to tender it for investment by global or local companies… the company is not able to carry out the project by itself for lack of funds.

French engineering giant Alstom has signed a preliminary deal to build a high-speed rail line linking Basra and Baghdad in Iraq.

An Alstom spokesman confirmed to the BBC it had signed a "memorandum of understanding" with Iraqi officials as a first step in the project.

The line would also connect with the cities of Karbala and Najaf.

The company will hold exclusive talks with Iraqi officials for 12 months to try to strike a final agreement.

Basra is approximately 450km (280 miles) south-east of Baghdad and the proposed line would involve a 650km network, Alstom says. The line would handle speeds of up to 250km/h (155 mph).

French junior transport minister Thierry Mariani, who announced the move at the Paris International Airshow on Friday, said he would travel to Iraq in September or October to discuss the possible deal.

No financial details for the proposed project are being made available, the Alstom spokesman said.

Alstom recently signed another preliminary deal to build an elevated rail line in Baghdad.

Railway Info

Could you tell me where the train dispatching is done and do they have the new dispatching system in place?

How many employees remain with the company?

I was also curious as to what kind of rule book and regulations they operate under. I have seen the Egyptian rule book and wonder if the same one is used in most places.

What do they do for training there employees?

Thanks!

PRTC you're asking us way too much here!

Better contact the State Company for Railways directly and ask them! (though I doubt you'll get much of an answer!).

Each company will construct 50 km simultaneously....if this clever idea will be implemented than two years doesn't sound that ambitious.
