Ministry plans $70bn national rail network
11/08/2011

Baghdad, AUgust 11 (AKnews) – Ministry of Transport plans for a $70bn rail network that links the Iraqi provinces with high-speed trains travelling at 240 km per hour have been submitted to the cabinet for approval, says a senior ministry official.

Deputy Transport Minister Bangin Rekani told AKnews today that the project has been submitted to the Council of Ministers as part of a bid to connect Iraq to its neighboring countries, develop internal transportation and boost the Iraqi economy.

“The ministry has insufficient funds to implement the project, and therefore is awaiting the approval of the council of ministers to dedicate extra funds.”

Is Iraq planning on adding a railway line from ramadi-trabil (which would be shorter journey but rather pointless as the only possible stopping point is rutba).

Or will they extend the line from akashat to trabil (which is less than 100km, and the train would be linked in to the existing anbar line and to all the towns along the way to Baghdad).

Does anyone have any idea as to what kind of cargo trains operate across Iraq and where they are to be seen?

Construction begins on 500km Jordan-Iraq railway

[8/27/2011]

The Jordanian government has formally approved a 500km railway line from the port of Aqaba to the Iraqi border near Traibil, the Iraqi Transport Ministry has reported.

A spokesman for the Public Railway Company (PRC), Jawad al-Kharasan, told AKnews that Iraq has begun construction of the railway line from Ramadi to the border in order to meet up with the Jordanian side of the line.

The railway will improve the direct connection between Iraq and Jordan in order to support commercial and industrial cooperation between the two countries. Trade between Iraq and Jordan is worth $1bn a year.

The PRC enlisted the German Deutsche group at a cost of $33m to develop the railway line within Iraq. The Iraqi government expects the transport capacity of the railway line with Jordan to reach six-million tons a year. The top speed of the trains will be 180km/h.

Transport Ministry wants More Money for Railway Projects

Posted on 04 October 2011.

Iraq’s Ministry for Transport has complained that the $60 million (7o billion Iraqi dinars) that were allocated in the 2012 budget for the development and rehabilitation of the Iraqi Republic Railways Company (IRR) are not enough.

“The Ministry of Transport tries to attract investment companies in order to finance its railway projects,” Ministry spokesman Jawad al-Kharsani told AKnews.

Iraq’s railway system urgently needs to be repaired since little money was spent on it under Saddam Hussein and much of the infrastructure was damaged during the war in 2003 and years of insurgency and sabotage.

US Helps Iraq Build Safe and Efficient Rail System
October 13 2011

Iraq’s railways are now safer and more efficient as a result of two projects funded with $60 million by the United States.

The successful completion of the Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) system and Digital Microwave Radio Communication Network (DMRCN) will help Iraq to move goods, people, and raw materials quickly about the country.

They provide the Iraq Republic Railways (IRR) with a state-of-the-art train control system that allows dispatchers to track and control rail movements throughout the IRR network.

Railroad operators will know the exact position of every train with significantly greater accuracy than with traditional signaling systems, which allows more traffic to be handled on the system.

With more trains able to move at the same time, more people can safely travel throughout the country, and more products for sale and export can reach markets and shipping sites quickly.

This communication system became fully operational in September after seven years of work. The approximately $60 million for the projects came from the Iraq Reconstruction and Relief Fund, while the planning and development work was a cooperative effort by U.S. and the IRR.

These projects are two among many shared U.S.- Iraq programs supporting infrastructure improvements in the country as part of the United States’ commitment to supporting Iraq’s economic development under the Strategic Framework Agreement.

I keep reading all these grandiose plans about various plans and construction "having started" on this line or another in Iraq or Jordan. However, I get the sense that nothing is really happening. Anyone know if "on the ground" there is actual construction on any of these projects?

I keep thinking as to how many times I have read over the years that Syria and Jordan for example are building a standard gauge line between them to replace the old narrow gauge Hejaz line. Yet, despite all of the news releases and pronouncements, no such line has opened to date.

The only countries I know for a fact are making actual investments in heavy rail (in the billions of $$) in the region are Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel and to a lesser extent, Iran. I wish there was some reliable source of information as to what is actually going on. In one story you read about the Iraqi government approving a $70 billion investment plan to be implemented within 2 years and on the other hand you read a story that the Iraqi railways only have a meager $60 million for development. What is really going on? Anyone?

New Railway Opened Between Karbala and Musayyib

[Picture: Musayyab – Karbala railway]

A new railway line between Karbala and Musayyib [Musayyab] was opened this week by the Transport Ministry, reports AKnews.

The new line was opened in Babil and Karbala Provinces just to the south of Baghdad, to transport Shiite pilgrims marking the 40th day after Hussein Ibn Ali was martyred. Around 8,000 people are expected to be traveling from Musayyib to Karbala for the ceremonies.

The federal government had allocated 5 billion IQD ($4.2 million USD) to provide services, including transport, to visitors.

The chairman of Karbala Provincial Council, Mohammed Hamid al-Moussawi, told AKnews the Ministry wants to reduce road traffic when pilgrims return to their homes after the ceremonies.

“The most significant problem for Karbala is transferring the visitors to their provinces at the end of the visit, although new railway lines have been opened and several Iraqi ministries including Trade, Transport and Defense participate in the transport process.”

“The government in Karbala began building a modern road network last year to link the Province with its neighbours. The Ya Houssein road cost 50 billion IQD ($42.8 million USD) and was paid for by the Iraqi Council of Representatives. It will reduce traffic on the main roads that connect Karbala to Baghdad, Babil and Najaf Provinces, and it is scheduled to be completed this year.”
