Steak Escape expanding in Dubai, with Iraq up next



Steak Escape isn’t just expanding in Central Ohio – the Columbus-based cheesesteak chain also is adding more units in the Middle East, according to Arabian Business.

Franchisee HMS Steak Ltd. opened its first location in Dubai last fall, the publication said, and now is planning up to 10 more Steak Escapes there and in Abu Dhabi, also part of the United Arab Emirates, with others planned in Iraq.

“The UAE’s diverse cultural mix provides us the unique opportunity to promote Steak Escape’s rich history of ‘Philly’ style food while adapting our offering to the region’s epicurean traditions,” HMS Director Ibrahim Shallal told the publication.

The chain serves 100 percent halal meat and vegetarian choices.

A separate franchisee has eateries in Saudi Arabia and the rights to Qatar.

QSR Magazine previously reported that Steak Escape opened a restaurant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, two years ago, and plans more in Kurdistan and Oman.

Columbus-based Escape Enterprises Ltd. has more than 80 Steak Escapes predominately in the U.S. and Mexico.

Cristal to reopen Ishtar Hotel in Iraq



Cristal Group, a premier luxury hospitality company in the Middle East, has announced the signing to reopen the landmark Ishtar Hotel, now renamed Cristal Grand Ishtar Hotel.

CaliBurger to open in Kuwait and Iraq

CaliBurger has signed a franchise agreement to begin operations of CaliBurger restaurants in Kuwait and Iraq. The franchisee, Ali Hashem, will have rights to open multiple units in Kuwait and serve as the master franchisee for Iraq.

“Burger concepts in Kuwait are experiencing very high sales, and Iraq represents a tremendous future growth opportunity,” said Rick DeMarco, Chief Operating Officer of CaliBurger.

CaliBurger expects to execute additional international franchise agreements in the near future. “Our strategy is to open company-owned and company-controlled restaurants in China and the United States,” said John Miller, chairman of the CaliBurger board of directors. “Through our franchising development partner, Fransmart, we are seeing tremendous demand for international franchise agreements. We will carefully select our franchise partners and support them through a dedicated international franchise support team.”
