Sunshine on Sunday helps road, flyover, demolition works
NH road works on war footing in B C Road
Quote:
Bantwal, June 20, DHNS

As per the order of Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj, movement of vehicles were completely banned from B C Road Circle to Polali Cross on Sunday, to facilitate the work on road widening, flyover and to drain off slush that has been causing inconvenience to the pedestrians and pave way for concreting of the road.

Demolition drive: Illegal buildings being demolished in B C Road on Sunday. The illegal buildings which were coming in the way of widening the roads in B C Road were also razed to ground. Police had placed the barricade at B C Road Circle and Polali-Kaikamba entrance arch by 8 am on Sunday. As soon as the works began, the slush piled up in the highway was drained off and later concrete was laid. On the other hand, NHAI team demolished the shops using JCBs. Some shop keepers had voluntalry evicted their shops.

When Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj visited the spot at 2 pm, some shop owners tried to convince him, for which the DC said that “no concession will be given to those who have constructed buildings on government land.” MP Nalin Kumar kateel, MLA Ramanath Rai also visited the spot and interacted with the shop owners.

Only emergency services like ambulance, fire-service vehicles and the vehicles carrying marriage parties were allowed to ply on the highway. It may be recalled that the pedestrains had expressed their anguish over the slush and other such frequent problems faced on the highway recently by sowing seeds on the road. Meanwhile, the city-based vehicles from Uppinangady, Puttur and Bantwal areas were asked to take a diversion at Melkar Junction and proceed on Konaje- Tokkottu stretch. The highway wore a deserted look owing to the ban on movement of vehicles. A peepal tree which was providing shade to the passengers for the last 50 years was also felled on Sunday. As the rains gave a break on Sunday, the concreting of the road was undertaken without any problem.

Quote:
Road may be closed on Monday too

The work on the road will continue on Sunday night too. “If the work on concreting of the road, demolition of buildings can not be completed by 8 am on Monday, then the ban will be extended,” said the DC. The ban on movement of vehicles ends on 8 am on Monday as per his earlier orders.

Demolish all illegal structures.

Buildings at BC Road razed for road-widening

Demolition was taken up amid tight police security

Traffic on the stretch had been banned on Sunday

DEVELOPMENT:People gather around the authorities who had come to inspect the demolition of certain structures at BC Road, near Mangalore, Sunday.

BC Road (Dakshina Kannada): The authorities on Sunday demolished portions of several shops and other structures on both sides of the National Highway 48 at BC Road town, about 30 km from here.

The move was aimed at enabling the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to widen the highway and complete the ongoing works on a flyover there.

The demolition was carried out amid tight police security. As a precaution, electricity supply to the town was cut off from 9 a.m. The district administration had banned the traffic between Polali Crossroad Junction and Dharmasthala Crossroad Junction. People who had gathered at the demolition site appeared to be happy. Vinayak from Bantwal said that road construction could not be halted for the sake of a few shopkeepers.

Seetharam, a driver who travels along the highway regularly, said: “This stretch gets blocked every day. From now on, my job will become easier.” Some of the buildings there were constructed decades ago.

“My father renovated this building 45 years ago and started a lunch home. The Government has given me adequate compensation (Rs. 7.45 lakh). I may not find another equally well-located as this one,” said Rajesh Nayak, after his restaurant was demolished.

Deputy Commissioner V. Ponnuraj visited the spot.

The NHAI also strengthened the shoulder portions of the highway on both sides of a 500-m stretch on Sunday.

P.N. Gawasane, Project Director, NHAI, Mangalore, told The Hindu “Shoulder portions of the highway have been temporarily raised on specific request by the local people and district administration for the convenience of pedestrians.”

Mr. Gawasane said that work on laying the service roads on both the sides of the highway would begin on Monday.

The police diverted traffic, bound for Puttur, Dharmasthala and Uppinangady and vice versa at Mahaveera Circle in Mangalore to an alternative route that passes via Thokkottu, Konaje and Mudipu to reach Melkar on NH 48.

However, vehicles bound for BC Road were allowed to ply on NH 48 till Polali Crossroad Junction.

There is no way on this State Highway

While the Government has been showcasing the State as an investment destination, roads, an essential infrastructure for industrial progress, continue to remain underdeveloped. The state highways, district major roads and even the National Highways passing through the State are in dire need of a facelift.

A stretch of Konanur-Makutta state highway bordering Hassan district provides a classic example of the poor road infrastructure in the State. The official apathy could be gauged from the fact that people had to approach High Court seeking direction for the repair of this 80.33 km stretch. Following court direction, the government, ultimately released a sum of Rs 25 crore to develop only 16 km of the road. The cost has now escalated to Rs 28 crore now. However, the work on 14 km has already been completed and the Public Works Department would take up repair on the remaining two kilometers after monsoons. The state highway passes through Kodagu, identified as a tourist hotspot in Karnataka.

Deputy Commissioner sends proposal to the Government.
‘Bypass road from Surathkal to Talapady’
Quote:
Mangalore: June 22, DHNS:

The Dakshina Kannada district administration has sent a proposal to the government to introduce bypass road connecting Surathkal and Talapady, said Deputy Commissioner V Ponnuraj.

Speaking at the Karnataka Development Programme (KDP) meeting chaired by District-in-Charge Minister Krishna Palemar, he said, that the proposed bypass road is 30 km long and 45 metre wide.

“It will pass through Kotekar-Konaje-Adyar-Maravoor-Kuloor. It will connect the industrial areas and will also ease the traffic congestion between Talapady and Surathkal.
The proposal has been sent to the Public Works Department,” the Deputy Commissioner said.

Confusion

MLA U T Khader and Ramanath Rai said that there is a confusion between urban and rural areas while conducting survey for the proposed four-laning of road works between Talapady and Nanthur.

They said that there was another proposal before the Union Government to widen the existing Melkar Junction-Mudipu-Konaje-Thokottu Road and the Ministry for Road Transport and Highways are likely to approve the proposal.

Khader said that the district administration should write a letter to the Government to restrict the width of the Melkar Junction-Thokkottu Junction Road to 30 metre to avoid the inconvenience being caused to the public. If the proposed road is widened by 40 metre, then many people will lose their property on the stretch.

Responding to the Deputy Commissioner said that the purpose of widening the road was to create an alternative to the BC Road-Mangalore stretch on NH 48. Khader also alleged that some industrial interests were behind the move to widen this road by 45 metre.

On the concreted roads within the city limits, Khader said that the Mangalore City Corporation authorities have not set right the uneven approach to the newly concreted roads. There are many concreted roads which do not have proper approach. Palemar directed Joint Commissioner to lay inter locks on such uneven approaches at the earliest.
Zilla Panchayat Chief Executive Officer Shivashankar, Zilla Panchayat President Santhosh Kumar Bhandary and others were present.

That will be the half-ring-road for Mangalore
Distance between Surathkal to Talapady is 25km so that can be called peripheral-ring-road instead?

NICE launches Peacock bridge
Quote:
Bangalore, June 24 DHNS

The Nandi Infrastructure Corridor Enterprises Limited (NICE) on Thursday inaugurated a bridge and four ramps on the Bangalore Mysore Infrastructure Corridor (BMIC), near Hoskerehalli on Mysore Road.

AT LAST: The NICE inaugurated Peacock bridge near Hoskerehalli on Thursday. DH PhotoThe new bridge named ‘Peacok Bridge’ holds huge monolithic structures of one peacock and four bulls (Nandi). Each bull weighs about eight tonnes.

Stating that building the bridge was his dream, NICE Managing Director Ashok Kheny said: “All litigations surrounding the land in this area have been resolved and we could formally complete the construction of the bridge and ramps.”

“We have cleared tonnes of garbage at this place before building the bridge, an act which was welcomed by people residing in the nearby localities,” he added. Kheny said his scheduled meeting with the chief minister, on Thursday afternoon, to discuss the progress of the BMIC project and preparation of a joint status report on the same was cancelled.

However, he refused to say when the next meeting was scheduled. Similarly, he also declined to comment on the letter written by the former PWD Principal Secretary R B Agawane, alleging NICE of securing 554 acres of excess land for the project’s peripheral road. When questioned about a similar project proposed from Bidar to Bangalore, Kheny said: “We have made a formal proposal to the government and wanted it to be included as part of the Global Investors’ Meet. But the government could not act on it, as it has been decided that PPP models would be implemented on the Swiss Challenge method and amendments to accommodate the same was awaiting the Cabinet’s nod.”

He added that once the project gets approval the travel time from Bidar to Bangalore will be reduced to six hours, as opposed to the present 14-16 hours.
