Wow the area of Los Angeles is really great.
Has anyone cool pictures of the subway or light rail and the stations. I like it and love the various stations. Or of each skyscraper or something else. The new and the old

You can't compare NYC to LA metro area. Compare either City vs City or Metro vs Metro.

I agree. This comparison means nothing. While the city of LA is around 165 sq miles larger than the city of NY, the entire metro of NYC covers much much more land than the metro of LA.

From Wikipedia:
NYC
- City 468.9 sq mi (1,214.4 km2)
- Land 304.8 sq mi (789.4 km2)
- Water 165.6 sq mi (428.8 km2)
- Urban 3,352.6 sq mi (8,683.2 km2)
- Metro 6,720 sq mi (17,405 km2)

LA
-City 498.3 sq mi (1,290.6 km2)
- Land 469.1 sq mi (1,214.9 km2)
- Water 29.2 sq mi (75.7 km2) 5.8%
- Urban 1,667.9 sq mi (4,319.9 km2)

If Los Angeles had a mature mass transit/rail system (like NYC's), I assure you there wouldn't be so many damn cars on our freeways. The lack of a rail network in LA for so many decades has created our car culture. And to think we had one of the largest rail networks in the world. Thats what happens when you wipe out 1000 miles of rail lines to build freeways.

Thundergod, you are so right!
And for the rest of you "city vs city" children, I'm illustrating walkability, not anything else.
New York's square mileage is and has been for decades at just a tad over 300 even.
Now, let's us sit back and enjoy the day ... let it go now ... ta taa ...

LA's metro and urban area is still growing, my guess is that in the next few years and this census if not this, the next(2020), not only orange county but San Bernadino, ventura, riverside and parts of san diego couty will be part of the metro area. wikipedia puts the metro area at 4850.3 sq. mi.
with more of the unincorporated and incorporated areas being included, such as oxnard, lancaster, palm springs, palmdale, etc. the area will increase by hundreds if not thousands of square miles and soon match and possibly beat new york.
of course i could be wrong.

orange county, san bernardino, ventura, and riverside should already be a part of the metropolitan area. i certainly have always considered it all. traveling between all these places is seamless in development. but instead it's all labeled CSA.

check out Kenni's post #3643. it shows the city to city, urban to urban, and so on.

you would think that since los angeles is not divided by bodies of water, our locals would walk more often than drive. but yeah, we don't nearly have the rail system that new york city has which makes walking an easier commute across their region.

I meant where is the number. I wonder why they would include the Metro sq miles for NY and not LA in Wikipedia. I'm sure LA's is bigger.

We're WAY off topic, but it's an interesting topic.

I found this NASA City Metropolitan Area Comparison. To scale.

NEW YORK METRO AREA

LOS ANGELES METRO AREA

The way they bundle up these things is not based on city, county or sate boundaries, but rather on urban centers and their sprawl.

"People" (don't supposedly) walk in Los Angeles because we make parking and driving to cheap and easy. But this goes for 90% of the rest of the US. The national average for transit ridership to commute to work is around 3%.

Still don't know who "they" are, but I cannot endorse this thread unless you deal in reality, and reality is this:

And we should end this here.
