great map, but the numbers seem a bit dated. i cant wait for the new census numbers. we are going to have a shitload of fun deciphering them.

In contrast the NYC CSA crosses state boundaries with no regard to lines drawn on a map. I felt it would be misleading to report 33,000 sq miles where sizable parts are non-inhabitable by humans. This is what I found interesting about the MSA's and CSA's of LA and NY by comparison.
I'm not saying we should count the whole 33,000 square miles. But Los Angeles and Orange Counties combined come out to 4,850 square miles. That's the MSA.

^ Urban areas are completely different than MSAs/CSAs. It's simple:

Los Angeles County: 4,061 square miles
Orange County: 789 square miles

That all adds up to, yes, 4,850 square miles. Does that mean anything to you? I hardly think it's just some coincidence. It's the MSA, not the urban area.

We know this "westy". We've been over this so many times over the past 5 years that we're shitting blood. My point was.....nevermind. You know what my point was.

^ No, I don't know what your point was. Are you using urban area, MSA, or CSA? I'm confused.

Strange at best.
And as I stated previously a difference of 50 square miles is not "almost". You couldn't fit NYC inside of the San Fernando Valley(City Of LA portion) if you stroked its hair and told it "I could get it in if you'd just take a deep breath and relax".
You've got serious issues.

We ought to go ahead and just include the Oxnard area as well as San Diego and, at the very least, the eastern San Bernardino area.
The illustration above leaves out a lot. For us.

Here's my illustration:

This is 40 miles east of Manhattan:

This is 50 miles east of Downtown L A:

This is 40 miles west of Downtown L A:

This is 40 miles west of Manhattan in New Jersey:

Why aren't these gridlike urban areas not included in L A?

To end the confusion, why don't we just compare it by county?

New York County:
Area
- Total: 33.77 sq mi (87.5 km2)
- Land: 22.96 sq mi (59.5 km2)
- Water: 10.81 sq mi (28 km2)

Population
- Total: 1,629,054
- Density: 70,951/sq mi (27,394.3/km2)

Los Angeles County:
Area
- Total: 4,752 sq mi (12,308 km2)
- Land: 4,061 sq mi (10,518 km2)
- Water: 691 sq mi (1,790 km2)

Population
- Total: 9,862,049 (2008 estimate)
- Density: 2,427 /sq mi (937 /km2)

so now we're comparing Manhattan with LA County? I would guess we win on mountains.

sure, it all comes down to the geographical features of a region...
obviously from space, LAmetro is gonna look really clearly defined for the most part - once you get to the other side of the san gab mtns, things being looking murky (& will get murkier into the future)
