mixed use is way better than the old thinking of segregated zones anyways. much less pressure on transport and areas dont go 'dead' in the night

Demarcation is the main reason for Bombay's traffic woes. Somehow, the demarcation happened naturally

It is not old thinking; it is still relevant. If this is not applicable to Mumbai, blame the high population and unplanned and inadequate infrastructure.

I totally disagree. Having seen this in Boston, where people live way out in the boondocks (some in Rhode Island and New Hampshire, even) and drive/commute back to downtown, I think it's pretty darn stupid not to have mixed development. Otherwise, you're just encouraging the emergence of more glorified villages (which, to me, were what the suburbs in Boston / NJ were).

^Good Article. They need to completely close some roads and make them a pedestrian only walker-plaza like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sa..._Promenade.jpgThey also should make one-ways to increase traffic flow and reduce the risk of head-on collisions. |

India's bureaucracy is 'the most stifling in the world' Page last updated at 12:35 GMT, Thursday, 3 June 2010 13:35 UK E-mail this to a friendPrintable version By Chris Morris BBC News, Delhi Civil servants complain of political interference A new report has confirmed what many Indians have long suspected - their country's bureaucratic system is one of the most stifling in the world. The Hong Kong based group, Political and Economic Risk Consultancy, surveyed more than 100 business executives in 12 Asian countries. The poll suggested India had the worst levels of excessive red tape. Yet this seems not to have impeded performance - it has just released another set of strong growth figures. But for many foreign companies that success is despite rather than because of the system they face, the report says. There has so far been no response to the report from the civil service. Bureaucracy and corruption The report ranks bureaucracies across Asia on a scale from one to 10, with 10 being the worst possible score. India scored 9.41. Continue reading the main story The inertia generated by a stifling bureaucratic system will, in the medium term, prevent India matching the growth rates of its great Asian rival China Political and Economic Risk Consultancy report Frequent promises to reform the bureaucracy, the report says, have come to nothing, mainly because the civil service is a power centre in its own right. Starting a business in India is incredibly hard, and enforcing contracts can be nigh on impossible. There is a strong link, the report says, between bureaucracy and corruption - and a widely held belief that bureaucrats are selfish and highly insensitive to the needs of the people they are supposed to help. None of this will come as any surprise to most Indians, or to many within the civil service itself. A recent survey of the Indian bureaucracy found large numbers of civil servants complaining of undue political interference, and a widespread fear that anyone questioning the system would be transferred to obscure postings in bureaucratic backwaters. Given the level of dissatisfaction among foreign business executives and Indians themselves, the Political and Economic Risk Consultancy report poses an interesting question: just how much better could India be doing if it were able to reduce bureaucracy? One consequence, it believes, is that the inertia generated by a stifling bureaucratic system will, in the medium term, prevent India matching the growth rates of its great Asian rival China. |

We have so many High Rises comming in Mumbai which is Good in a way and some Cluster Redevelopment projects are also Approved/Proposed. Before Approving Any Highrise/Cluster Development Project we should ensure that they leave more space for the Roads to be widened Up. Say a cluster recdevelopment project is proposed for 500 meter Area. Say whole area has 2+2 Lane road, then project shoudl be approved only if the builder is willing to make the Road 3+3 or 4+4 lanes. now even though some part of the road is 2+2 lanes and some part is 3+3 lanes it will still lessen the traffic on that stretch, eventually the areas further will be redeveloped and the road will be widened. Without this we will have lot of cluster redevelopment happening but the road will not be widened and the footpaths wll not be there which is not a good thing. Any thoughts ?

this already happens. highrises in congested localities have to give a larger set-back area than the older buildings. just drive around lower parel and you will see it all around you
the builder gets to keep the fsi for the area he gives up, so he doesnt mind |

I was curious about one particular thing which is common to all mumbai skyline pictures, there are lots of these small to medium sized factory type structures with a distinctive roof color and look abandoned, I know they're not chawls or slums because they have a rather industrial look to them.
Anyone know what these things are, they seem to take up quite a lot of space. |

Remember mumbai made its core or major money on the back of the textile mills.(though some think ship building i prefer to differ) A good reason why the British decided to develop mumbai cause the areas of Guj and Maharashtra (then the bombay presidency) were good for growing cotton. Then the mills shut down as labour in mumbai was expensive and moved to inland maha and Guj etc. They are slowly being converted to high rises. The chawls were set up for the textile workers to live in. |

Guys I have an announcement to make. I'm leaving for Mumbai tomorrow and will be there for a couple of months. I may be in other parts of the country as well but that is still unconfirmed. Are there any buildings/areas/metro etc construction/cityscape photos that anyone wants me to take in particular? I'm open to many requests, especially that of SoBo, as I will be there most often.
