Stockholm, July 2009

In this thread Iíll present some pictures I took in July 2009 when I visited Stockholm. One would ask why I kept them so long. Well, after so many threads about this city in SSC, I thought that one more thread would be superfluous. Nonetheless, I have some personal comments to make, thatís why I decided to upload my pictures after all.

Stockholm is essentially a forest, interspersed with buildings. Unfortunately the built area is not as attractive as I had imagined. There are many commie blocks and the city center could have been better preserved. After thinking a little bit, I realized that the commie blocks show that Swedes love nature. If they had spread all those residents in a larger area, this would have destroyed much more forest.

Letís start from the Old Town. Surprisingly, the palace is not guarded by the police:

These are the 2 most famous buildings in Stockholm:

What I really appreciate in a city, is an attractive main shopping street, both architecturally and commercially. Drottningsgatan did not impress me very much, especially after a short stop-over in Vienna on the way to Stockholm.

I was surprised to hear loud Greek music from a shop. Who told them that locals like Greek music, in particular music of the cheapest kind (skyladika)?

This is another shopping street, specializing in luxury goods:

Europride 2009 was held in Stockholm a few days after I left. Thatís why ALL city buses were decorated with rainbow flags:

Even some taxis were sympathetic to the gay cause:

In general Stockholm looks like German cities that were destroyed during the war. The most horrible buildings are around Sergels Torg:

If you walk a little towards Ostermalm, the city gets much better. A bit like Vienna, but more colorful!

This is my favorite building, the Royal Theater:

For the rest, you can see LOTS of 6-storey, nondescript apartment buildings.

What gives the city a special character is its proximity to the sea.

Here is Sodermalm, the part of the city where young people go to have fun:

Sodermalm has also another advantage. Being a hilly area, it offers a view to the Old Town:

When it comes to rolling stock, Stockholm metro is maybe the best in Europe!

Its stations are decorated with modern art.

A long escalator shaft:

Historic trams look a bit rickety, thatís why I didnít venture a ride on them:

On the contrary modern trams (tvarbana) are comfortable and fast.

My overall rating of Stockholm:
