I'm sure they will, but I wonder where the next one will be after the '57 Quayside' one?
The Westgate Road one is probably a good shout? I can't believe nothing has been done with it yet.

This one?

THAT would be a very large 'pocket park', but something certainly needs doing with it. Perhaps just the strip next to Norwich Union House, fronting onto Westgate Road?

It certainly is a VERY prominent location.

You know I never realised that site was so big; its enormous! Whatever eventually does get built there it will be a very large building indeed.

Well spotted elliot, an excellent "old and new" comparison!

I'm just about to add your post to the INDEX under both 'Contrasts' and 'Newcastle Old & New' !!

This is an interesting site, with lots of photos of abandoned buildings in Newcastle and Gateshead.

The photos were mostly taken in 2008, and a LOT has changed since then . . .

Is that square thing one of the air shafts/escape tunnels for the Metro?

Yes, it is one of the (delightfully named) 'Draught Relief Shafts' for the Metro, like the one at Haymarket outside Haymarket Hub, the one outside Fenwicks in Blackett Street, and the one actually inside one of the buildings of Old Eldon Square.

I'm sure there are others dotted around?

Thanks. The random ladder on the top looks oddly placed.

What's the thing in the middle of road in the 1972 picture with the PTE logo on it? Surely not a draught relief shaft, unless they were thinking ahead.

Aha, yes, this is something we have covered before on this forum, on the "General Knowledge" thread in May last year.

I was asking people in my question, what one of those very "things" were as there used to be a fair few of them, though the one I used a photo of was on Shields Road.

Here is a copy of the post that showed both my question and the eventual answer - plus a photo of another one of those boxes . . .

(2) Whereabouts in Newcastle was this photo taken?

Where? I'll plump for the end of Northumberland St./Haymarket

The 'blue line' across the middle represents the river Tyne, as this was originally the "Tyneside PTE" Logo (before Tyne & Wear).

HOWEVER,

The photo is NOT an air vent for the Metro, neither was it in the Northumberland St/Haymarket area (though, there may have been a one around there somewhere, as there were a fair few of these) just NOT this one!

I guess they were also stocked with ticket-blanks and other materials. They MAY even have been staffed for route monitoring and cash collection -that, I don't know.

(2) That's the junction of Heaton Road with Shield Road. Most (all?) of the buildings are still there. The bank (empty) and the 30's steel window frames in the top left.

PERFECT answer DXNewcastle, thanks!

I always assumed they had telephones in there too.

Here is a 'wider view' version of the same photo, showing the precise location you described . . .

Interesting. My guess was that it was a toilet for bus drivers.

I can remember as a kid seeing that PTE box on Shields Road. Must have gone in the early 80's. I can actually remember a Inspector sort of person (black uniform and black inspectors hat) sitting inside of one...

This building adjoining the cooperage has been sold, according to the signs. I remember a planning application for this site a few years ago, that was withdrawn. Has anyone got any information on what's planned?

Wasn't/isn't there something similar to this on Westgate Rd just down from Cross House outside David Gray's solicitors? Or is that a french style information stand? I always remember looking out for it when coming down Westgate Hill toward the Quayside when we used to go to the Sunday Quayside Market in the 70s.

The PTE Boxes were all absolutely identical to the two shown earlier on this thread.

I can't specifically remember one being where you say, but there could easily have been one there, there were a lot of them around!

I can't believe I can't find any pics of this online, I might have to hit the books. According to Google Earth, although it is hard to make out, it was last there in 2002.
