Inauguration of the first stations of Line 2, between Sant Antoni and Sagrada Família. 1995.
The video shows the novelties of the line respect the others existing of the network, like elevators, automatic tickets machines, new trains, ATP...
Look the tunnels, like London underground.

L4 Poble Nou Station: improved Accessibility works in progress

Works on improving the accessibility of Barcelona metro station Poble Nou have finally started, after all other stations on the Poble Nou stretch of the L4 yellow line received a much needed upgrade in previous years (Selva de Mar, Llacuna and Bogatell). Personally I would have liked an extra entrance on the Lope de Vega side of the station (seeing there are airshafts there already) similar to what they did at Bogatell, but that is maybe for the future when 'we' have more money again.

More information on the project here

I have a general question, and I'm a bit lazy to scroll through all posts.

Which lines of Barcelona subway system were built using a large diameter double-deck tunnel where platforms are embedded on the tunnel tube instead of excavated outwards?

Only L9/L10 but only on certain parts of the line.

All the blue section marked in the map is a tunnel of 12m diameter.

What is "pantales"?

--------

Why is this line so curvy around the airport, it adds tremendously to travel time and distance I bet!

I don't know the translation of "Pantalles", but the tunnel is this:

Two walls of concrete, covered by another layer of concrete or something.

It's true, the section south of the line (opening in 2016) are very curvy. However, the Line 9 and 10 are the most faster lines of the network. It's possible that the travel between airport and Zona Universitària can be done in 30-40 minutes. We'll see the day of the inauguration.

The line was originally planned to have a straighter alignment between Barcelona and the Airport, but its layout was changed at least three times during planning stage in order not to pass beneath the Airport main runway, to serve the train station in El Prat de Llobregat and to serve future urban developments in the north of that municipality (which were of course delayed due to the economic situation of Spain). That means the new stretch of line will open with two ghost stations (Ciutat Aeroportuària and La Ribera), which won't open in the mid term.

Why would that be a problem? Soil subsidence of the runway and fear of closure for repairs? Is El Prat airport build over a former swamp or reclaimed area or smth?

More or less. The Airport is built on deltaic soil. It doesn't mean that the runway would have been damaged had the tunnel been built, but they changed the project, I assume to save costs. It's quite funny because the projected railway link to Terminal 1 of the Airport will run beneath the runway, so we'll see how it turns out. Works are expected to start later this year.

Is that a short branch from the already existing link to Terminal 2 or some completely new alignment?

I'll believe that when I see it.

Updates!

Collblanc station, on the future L9 South:

The elevator between street and the hall is almost finished:

And a view of the construction inside. The works are now on the mecanical stairs between the hall and the platforms. This station will be like La Sagrera station, opened on the North section since 2010:

Just came back from my first trip to BCN. As part of my trips and usage of city metros, I like to purchase the local (non-tourist) rechargeable, smart card/integrated card for the city as a souvenir, and I was curious why BCN does not have one?

The closest thing that I could get was the Hola! BCN card. Is there something that I may have missed? I would think that with all the systems (TMB, FGC, RENFE, trams, etc.), that a rechargeable, smart card would be perfect.

It does have “integrated” cards. Most cards sold are valid on all means of transport within the metropolitan area (and further out, based on the number of zones you pay for). The most used card is the 10 ride T-10, valid for (almost) all transport within the central zone (zone 1). But they are not rechargeable, and only a bit smart.

There are talks of a smart card being introduced. But to be honest, I don’t think that not having such a system is a major problem. The investment needed for such an introduction can be better used elsewhere. (And for visitors, having the T-10 card and no “smart” system makes this probably one of the cheapest cities to travel in. I am personally fed up with having to pay, in other cities, for rechargeable cards – not the value, but the actual card – that I am only going to use for a day or two.)
