Melbourne's finest...

Myer Melbourne
Currently undergoing a $A300 million upgrade...Myer Melbourne is due to be completed in November 2010 and will feature an estimated 45 000 sq m of GFA across 7 floors. The top floor will be an exhibition space capable of holding functions and fashion parades. The roof will be designed to allow sunlight to filter in, providing a sunlight escalator atrium. Furthermore, heritage listed components of the building will be enhanced including the Myer Mural Hall and the famous Myer Windows (home of the Myer Christmas Windows)

Myer is a middle of the range department store, but CEO Bernie Brookes hopes, upon completion, the new Myer Melbourne will be held in the same company as the likes of Harrod's in London (it won't be, but at least they are aiming high)...

The interior of GL Paris is definitely more imposing than Harrod's London.

The exterior of the building isn't, though. Even for Paris standards it's barely average.

I wonder if it looked different some centuries ago. It seems they simplified the facade and now try to compensate with this strange construction that is illuminated at night. The upper floors apparently aren't part of the original building as well. That's something I hate about "modern" Paris.

Pretty much all major cities in the US still have downtown department stores, it's just that they're mostly owned by the same companies (especially Macys).
