The great Fenwick Department Store in Newcastle upon Tyne.

Nowadays, Fenwick occupies numbers 33 to 39 Northumberland Street, expanding from their 1910 base of only Nos. 37 to 39.

What not many people know is that they actually started off, much further along Northumberland Street, in an entirely different location . . .

Fenwick of Newcastle, Number 5 Northumberland Street.

Some early photos, after the move from No. 5 to No. 37-39 (before expansion to the full 33-39) . . .

On the current Northumberland Street site. 1885.

1890s

1910

1932

1932 (The original 'back entrance' at Blackett Street)

The 1970s extensions.

1985.

1995 (The re-vamped 'back entrance' at Blackett Street).

Christmas 2006.

2009. The 'modern 1970s' look on the left has now gone and on the right, the recent northerly extension into the small shop next door, is complete. The FRONT of the store now features "two towers", one at either end. Compare this to the "1985" photo above.

This adds even further, to the MAJESTIC appearance of Newcastle's most famous Department Store . . .

Some Fenwick Memorabilia . . .

The 'evolving' Fenwick LOGO, from the original signature of Mr J J Fenwick (1846-1905) . .

Finally, a History of the famous Fenwick Christmas Window, telling a Christmas Story
along the full length of the store front, every year . . .

This article is from the Newcastle Evening Chronicle of November 15th 2005.

All photos are credited on the "Newcastle Department Stores Thread" on the Newcastle Forum.

I would certainly agree and going by the photos it's just as bad inside!!
This is gimmick architecture that never lasts and becomes old fashioned very quickly. Selfridges London store, designed by the great American Architect Daniel Burnham (Union station Washington etc) was built for the ages and is of the highest quality - a true landmark.

The Selfridges building in London is a not too disimilar building style to the Fenwicks building in Newcastle, see Post 154.

I like them both!
