Old paintings and images are really great. I have enjoyed looking them, it makes me feel relaxed.

Marathaman.. any idea if there were any sketches / paintings taken of the Indian landscapes by Indians in the pre-British era?

It seems to me (I might be wrong) that much of the recording of landscapes of the time and many other icons of many a cities were actually either painted or photographed by the colonialists (French / Brit. / etc)

Would be interesting to see if any Mughal / Maratha paintings of landscapes survived the colonial era?

They do exist actually, but not available easily online. They're mostly stuffed away in museums and private collections I think.
We don't have the equivalent of the British Library online collections which have electronic copies of thousands of documents and artworks. That's where I got most of these from.

Marathaman,
How I missed this thread earlier?

Fantastic.

I will ask my relatives to dig for more photos as we have loads of them in the attic in our native place.

Good Initiative

Wow, this is some of the most beautiful historic architecture I have ever seen! I saved quite a few of these to my hard drive. Thanks for posting, Marathaman . I especially like the temples; I wonder how they built them so high?

Why in all these paintings do the town/cities look clean with nothing in the surrounding areas. Whereas in reality the cities are very cluttered, where buildings of historical interest are surrounded by random buildings and "shanty" towns.

The reality is today. These pictures and paintings are from the past. So clearly something has changed since then. Wouldn't you agree?

You mean population growth? I'd go along with that. Do you think some artistic allowance was also used, i.e. blanking out things which wouldn't look good in a painting?

Marathaman, you have created an incredibly fascinating thread, rich with absolutely beautiful pictures!

This thread is a feast for the eyes and mind...

India's civilization is one of the world's oldest (over 9000 years old since the Indus Valley Civilization, and probably even older)

This thread shows us a magnificient glimpse of India's glorious past.

Please keep this thread going.

What a bittersweet thread. Our aesthetic has become all muddled. Sheet metal doors everywhere.
