Best seats for opening ceremony of Youth Olympic Games could cost S$200
Quote:

SINGAPORE: As Singapore gets set to welcome athletes and officials to the YOG with a colourful opening ceremony at The Float@Marina Bay on August 14, MediaCorp has learnt that tickets for the best seats could cost S$200, with the cheapest at S$30.

Tickets for the closing ceremony at the same venue on August 26 are understood to be priced between S$15 and S$80.

Full details of the final ticket prices are expected to be announced later this month.

While no figures are available as to how many tickets will go on sale for both ceremonies, they are expected to be allocated via balloting due to the limited seating capacity at The Float@Marina Bay which can accommodate 25,000 spectators.

The creative director for both ceremonies is theatre director, actor and playwright Ivan Heng, while Cultural Medallion recipient Iskandar Ismail will be in charge of sound and music.

Last month, the government launched a tender for costumes for participants in the Games' opening and closing ceremonies on www.gebiz.gov.sg. The tender closes on April 5.

The Youth Olympics will feature athletes aged between 14 and 18 years competing in 200 events across 26 sports.

On Wednesday, the organisers released 320,000 tickets for sale via the Internet, phone booking and at 29 SISTIC outlets islandwide. These tickets can also be purchased through six SISTIC outlets in Indonesia and Malaysia.

"I would pay S$200 for the best seats," said Ding Yifei, a 29-year-old sports scientist.

"The pricing is alright for a prestigious event like this and we cannot always expect really low prices simply because it is a youth event. But the price must be justified with good quality content."

However, operations executive Vic Ng felt otherwise.

"I will pay money to watch the Youth Olympics, but not for the opening or closing ceremony," said the 33-year-old.

"I'd rather spend the money on attending the sports events and watching the athletes in action,” he added.

There is not much time for YOG riders and horses to get acquainted
Quote:

SINGAPORE - For equestrian riders, thebond between them and their horses is special.

That is why the equestrian competition at the inaugural 2010 Youth Olympic Games, to be held here from Aug 14-26, will pose a unique challenge to the 30 riders set to do battle.

Unlike other meets, they will not be allowed to use their own horses.

Instead, they will each be paired via a ballot with one of 30 horses procured by the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (Syogoc) from the Glen Haven Park in Kilcoy near Brisbane, Australia, as part of efforts to make the competition as "fair" as possible.

For Caroline Chew, the only Singapore rider to have met the qualifying mark so far, it means not being able to ride with either of her two horses, Pikadeur and Romaniero.

"It could work both ways in that everyone has to work with the same disadvantageas we're all on the same playing field," said the 18-year-old Hwa Chong Institution student.

"Of course, I would prefer my own horse as I'm used to that partnership. But as it's balloted, it's very difficult to say (how my chances will be).

"Each horse has its own quirks, and you need to know them well to get them to work, so as a rider you need to adapt your own skills to the horse's character."

Some 38 horses, between six and 12 years of age, were selected following a three-month process that ended in December last year.

They will leave for the Republic in mid-July, where they will be quarantined for two weeks.

Once passed fit, they will be housed at the Singapore Turf Club Riding Centre, the venue for the event.

They will be assigned a rider through a ballot.

"We have put in a rigorous procurement process to help ensure a level playing field," said Syogoc director (sports and venues) Patrick Lee yesterday.

"We will even provide the same feed to all the horses, so there is no differentiation in the way they are being prepared for the Youth Olympics."

The equestrian programme will feature individual and team events in showjumping, with each rider and horse being tested over a series of 10 to 13 obstacles.

The competition will see male and female riders from 30 National Olympic Committees competing, and hosts Singapore have one slot.

Four Vietnamese fencers will compete at Youth Olympic Games
Quote:

Nhan Dan - The International Fencing Federation has decided to grant four exceptional tickets for Vietnam to compete at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, due to be held in Singapore in August.

The list of these four fencers will be selected by Vietnam.

It proves that international friends have recognised the development process of the fencing sport in Vietnam in the past years.

The best international achievements Vietnam have gained include the bronze in the team's sabre event at the Asian Under-20 Championship in 2004 and the gold in the girls' épée event at the Asian Under-17 Championship in 2005.

FIFA bans Iranian women footballers from wearing hijab in YOG
Quote:
TEHRAN, April 4 (PNA/MNA) -- FIFA banned the Iranian women’s football team wearing hijab from participating in the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) which will be held from August 14 to 26 in Singapore.

FIFA at first invited the Iranian team to take part in the games but unexpectedly decided to forbid wearing hijab (Islamic covering) in the games.

President of Iran Football Federation Ali Kafashian wrote a request to the world football governing body to reconsider their decision.

He pointed out that due to religious beliefs, the Iranian women team will participate in the competitions only if they are allowed to observe the Islamic dress code.

Altogether, 170 countries are expected to participate in the 2010 Youth Summer Olympics. About 3,500 athletes and 875 accompanying persons are expected to participate in the games. Each country will send at least four athletes. (PNA/MNA)

Youth Olympic soccer team goes into camp
Quote:
THE Zimbabwe Under-15 Youth Olympic soccer team have gone into the first phase of camp for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games set for Singapore in August.

The team of 30 players got into camp on yesterday at Prince Edward School and begun their first training session in the morning under the guidance of coach Dumaza Dube and his assistant Tobias Mudyambanje.

Project manager for the team, Harry Taruva, said both Zifa and the Zimbabwe Olympic Committee are running the programme.

"We are running this programme together with ZOC and the team got into camp yesterday (Thursday) and they had full training day today (yesterday)," he said.

The team was originally scheduled to be in camp for two weeks but the duration has been cut short.

Taruva said due to financial problems the team will now be in camp for three days until Saturday and will regroup at the end of the month.

"We are no longer following the original plan because of financial constraints.

"We want to travel to Botswana or South Africa during the course of preparations for an international friendly and that is important," said Taruva.

Preparations for the Games began last month with the selection of players at regional levels.

The coaches identified talent in the provinces that fell under Zifa’s four regions.

The Northern Region is made up of Mashonaland Central, Mashonaland West and Harare while Manicaland, Mashonaland East and Masvingo make up the Eastern Region.

The Central Region consists of Matabeleland South and Midlands while Bulawayo and Matabeleland North make up the Southern Region.

The Zimbabwe Under-15 team was nominated by Fifa to be the sole representatives of the continent at the inaugural Youth Olympic Game scheduled to run from August 14 to 26 in Singapore.

Analysts believe the move was part of the spirit of Fifa’s Fair Play given that Zimbabwe was the only country that sent a true Under-17 team to the last African Youth Championship finals in Algeria.

Beginning of New Chapter in the Olympic Movement
Quote:
Opening and Closing Ceremonies for Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games: Beginning of New Chapter in the Olympic Movement

As Singapore marks the beginning of a new chapter in the Olympic Movement, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the inaugural Youth Olympic Games promises to engage, entertain and inspire global unity and national pride.

For the first time in Olympic history, the Opening and Closing Ceremonies will be held on the waterfront with a city skyline as the backdrop. In line with the Games' theme 'Blazing the Trail', the ceremonies will feature several novel elements that will add on to the rich Olympic tradition. The ceremonies will also focus on the Young Olympians and their hopes for the future.

The story behind the Opening Ceremony illustrates the parallels between Singapore and the Young Olympians – their struggles, hopes and dreams. The show celebrates Singapore’s origins and diversity, and offers a glimpse of the nation’s hopes for the future, drawing on all that Singapore has to offer in terms of art, culture and expertise.

The athletes' achievements will be celebrated in the Closing Ceremony where their lasting friendships will be honoured through the recollections and reconnections of their Olympic journey in Singapore.

Staged at The Float@Marina Bay – the world’s largest floating stage – the Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) will be held on 14 and 26 August 2010 respectively. Creating the show will be a Singapore team supported by creative talents from around the world.

"Olympic Opening and Closing Ceremonies are highly anticipated events with a global audience. I am confident that the creative team will be able to deliver an unforgettable and meaningful Singapore 2010 Opening and Closing Ceremonies for the participants, spectators as well as viewers" said Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer, Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.

"The ceremonies will also inspire participants and the audience to live by the Olympic values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. As host city of the first Youth Olympic Games, Singapore is honoured to have a role in helping to create a new chapter in the Olympic Movement."

Collaboration with Youths

Youths play an integral role from the conceptualisation to the production of the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. From the onset of the creative process, we have invited youths to join us in brainstorming sessions to provide feedback and share their ideas and perspectives. There will be about 7,000 youths performing in different segments of both ceremonies.

The Committee is inviting Singaporeans with origin from diverse nationality to blaze the trail with us by being a part of a special segment in the Opening Ceremony. They must be:

* A Singapore Citizen
* Between seven (7) to twenty-one (21) years of age
* With at least one parent/grandparent whose origin is from diverse nationality / country.

In addition, the committee is seeking public contributions of short films or animation clips revolving around the theme "Youth and Sports". For more details, please visit the Singapore 2010 website.

Ticket Sales for Opening and Closing Ceremonies

Registration for tickets begins Friday, 23 April 2010 from 0900hrs. As tickets for the Ceremonies are limited, a ballot-to-purchase system will be introduced to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to buy them. Ticket prices for the Opening Ceremony start from S$30 while those for the Closing Ceremony start from S$15.

Interested buyers will first have to register for the tickets at the Singapore 2010 website (www.singapore2010.sg/tickets) or ticketing hotline (+65 6348 2010), between 23 April to 9 May 2010. Each person is allowed to register for a maximum of four tickets for each Ceremony, regardless of price category. Checks will be performed on the registration database and a ballot system will then select successful applicants based on available inventory numbers. Successful applicants will be informed and tickets will be available for collection between 24 May and 7 June 2010.

Buzz Around the Bay with Relocation of 1st Countdown Clock
Quote:
Four Months to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games: Buzz Around the Bay with Relocation of First Countdown Clock

The first Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) Countdown Clock has been relocated from City Hall to Marina Bay. Together with a number of activities happening during Singapore 2010, Marina Bay will be the heart of the Youth Olympics Games (YOG). To add to the buzz, the Singapore 2010 television commercial (TVC) was also launched today.

The Singapore 2010 Countdown Clock, which was unveiled at City Hall during the One Year Countdown celebrations on 14 August 2009, has been moved to its new location at the waterfront of One Fullerton to welcome the first ever YOG, which is four months away. Relocating the Countdown Clock to One Fullerton is intended to bring Singapore 2010 closer to the people through a visual landmark as there will be many events and activities taking place in the Bay area.

Mr Goh Kee Nguan, Chief Executive Officer of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee shared, “Marina Bay will be abuzz with numerous YOG happenings, starting with the Singapore 2010 Opening Ceremonies which will take place at The Float@Marina Bay on 14 August 2010. The Closing Ceremony will also be held there on the 26 August 2010.

"Six sports - Boxing, Fencing, Handball, Judo, Taekwondo and Wrestling - will be competed at the nearby International Convention Centre. Outdoors at the Marina Reservoir, you can watch the Canoe-Kayak and Rowing competition. Cycling will also be starting and ending at The Float@Marina Bay. Educational activities to learn about the importance of water will also be held at the Marina Barrage. We therefore welcome all to join us to celebrate and enjoy the activities happening right in the heart of the city."

Omega, sponsor of the clock and Official Timekeeper of Singapore 2010, will be responsible for Games official competition results.

At the event, McCann Worldgroup (Singapore), the Official Marketing Communications Services Supplier to Singapore 2010 presented the Games’ creative concept which it has developed for the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The “Power of Youth” concept focuses on conveying the message that age is not a barrier for the youth, especially when it comes to sports where some of the world's most successful athletes are youths. Youth can achieve anything that they have set out to do, and the inaugural Youth Olympic Games is the perfect platform for youth to profile themselves.

The Singapore 2010 advertising campaign was launched in January this year and focuses predominantly on online media to reach out to the target audience globally. As part of the campaign, a TVC and print advertisements were also developed. Locally, the main channels are online and outdoor advertising media to generate more awareness leading up to the Games. SYOGOC is looking into more channels to market and publicise Singapore 2010.

The public can catch the TVC on Focus Media, the Official Advertising Space Sponsor’s digital Out-Of-Home (OOH) networks spanning commercial buildings in Singapore, Housing Development Board malls and SingPost outlets.

Youth Olympic Village
Quote:

The YOV will house over 5,000 athletes and team officials taking part in Singapore 2010, from 10 to 28 August 2010 for 18 days.

Located amidst lush greenery of the Nanyang Technological University (NTU) campus, the YOV will provide athletes and officials with comfortable but not lavish accommodation and services. The quiet and serene environment will be conducive and safe for the athletes to rest and prepare for competition, and in their free time socialise and participate in specially-designed cultural and educational activities.

The YOV is divided into two zones: the Residential Zone (RZ) and the Village Square (VS). The RZ is further organised into five clusters for easy orientation. Ten (10) Residential Halls will each be serviced by a Resident Centre with a front desk and be well-supported by common facilities such as TV rooms, meeting rooms, wireless Internet hot-spot access, prayer rooms and shared medical spaces. Laundry services will also be provided.

In addition, the RZ will provide several training facilities for the athletes. It offers a dining hall, a Digital Media Centre including an Internet centre, a medical clinic, doping sample collection spaces as well as recreation activities. A shared services centre in the RZ will support the administrative needs of the NOCs, while the daily Chefs de Mission meeting will be conducted just adjacent to it.

The VS is at the heart of the Village. Apart from the World Culture Village exhibition featuring the history and cultures of all the participating NOCs, musical performances, concerts, cultural and educational programmes, chat with Champions, and various sport-related forums will be held there.

For the convenience of YOV residents, retail shops will be available at the VS. There will be a bank that provides services such as currency exchange, a general store, a post office and a ticketing office. To support the work of journalists, a Media Sub Centre will also be located in the VS.

The YOV will be a lively yet relaxed home away from home for residents such that they can concentrate on sporting excellence, learn to live in respect of one another, and bring back fond memories of valuable friendships formed during their stay in Singapore.

WATCH OUT FOR YOUNG OLYMPIANS AT SINGAPORE 2010!

The Young Olympians are ready to take on the world. That's the key message that the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) is communicating in its marketing campaign for Singapore 2010.

As part of the "Power of Youth" campaign for the Games, SYOGOC recently launched an online viral video to build up awareness of the Games. Titled "Asafa Catch Me If You Can", the viral video featured one of the fastest men in history and Olympic gold medallist from Jamaica, Asafa Powell being challenged to a run by an intrepid teenager.

Seeded online through popular social networks such as Twitter, MySpace, Facebook and Youtube, the viral video has created intrigue and sparked the interest of youth from around the world. It has led to increased traffic to the Youth Olympic Games website and greater international awareness of the event. To date, the viral video has generated close to 350,000 views online.

"The Youth Olympic Games is a fantastic platform for young athletes around the world to compete and see where they stand at an international level. I am sure that there will be many talents that will be discovered in Singapore and will eventually become future Olympians and great athletes," said Powell.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will be held from 14 to 26 August and will feature all 26 summer Olympic sports. Tickets to the Games are on sale at www.singapore2010.sg/tickets. Don’t miss the opportunity to see the stars of tomorrow pit their athletic skills against each other at the world's first Youth Olympic Games.

Do you need help with that?

I think they expect that with the heavy arrivals of foreigners coming in, some might choose to come in earlier to get in on a cheaper airfare, etc.

10 Jun 2010

Quote:
The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced the list of Singapore 2010 Athlete Role Models (ARMs) for the inaugural Youth Olympic Games from 14 to 26 August in Singapore.

The list features many legendary names from the world of sport. The role models were appointed by the International Federations taking part in the Youth Olympic Games and by the IOC Athletes' Commission.

The Athlete Role Models will be in Singapore to mentor the 3,600 young athletes who are expected to attend the Youth Olympic Games. Among other activities, the ARMs will spend time with the athletes and will participate in activities during the Culture and Education Programme, which will focus on five themes: Olympism and Olympic values, skill development, well-being and healthy lifestyles, social responsibility and expression through digital media.

Athletes at the Youth Olympic Games will be encouraged to engage in conversation with the ARMs, who will attend the competitions, visit the Youth Olympic Village and feature in "Chat with Champions" forums designed to inspire and educate the participants with personal accounts of their own dreams and experiences, and the challenges they have overcome.

Sergey Bubka, an Olympic gold medal-winning pole vaulter and Chairman of the IOC Coordination Commission for the 1st Summer Youth Olympic Games, said he is delighted to be an Athlete Role Model and is impressed by the line-up put together by the International Federations and Athletes' Commission. "These are not just great athletes the International Federations have chosen, these are also inspirational people. I am sure the young athletes will enjoy being around them, and they will learn a great deal about what it takes to be a top athlete and live by the Olympic values."
