Oh come one!! Be positive!! What is so embarrasing about that!! It is not fantastic but it is still acceptable. If the IOC say it is okay, it is okay. Besides, I would like to have my hostel back, thank you very much......

Youth Olympic Flame arrives in Singapore
Quote:
SINGAPORE : The Youth Olympic Flame has arrived in Singapore - the host of the first Youth Olympic Games.

It arrived at about 2.20pm Thursday at Changi Airport, from Seoul in South Korea.

Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports, Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, led the welcoming party.

"This is the first and only time of our lifetimes that the flame will be here. And we need to take advantage of this opportunity to celebrate, to celebrate what we are as Singaporeans, ... what we stand for, and also to be able to open our hearts to welcome our guests from all over the world, in just a couple of days' time," said Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports.

The flame has made an international journey that spanned five continents.

Besides Seoul, it made stopovers in Berlin, Germany; Dakar in Senegal; Mexico City, as well as Auckland in New Zealand.

Its final destination is Singapore.

"The journey has been really incredible. When I look at the flame, it's not just a flame of the Games, but it reflects the passion and dedication of our team here, and this burning desire in them to deliver a great Games," said Ng Ser Miang, chairman of the Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee.

Singapore has planned a traditional six-day torch relay around the island from Saturday.

Torchbearers like hockey player Silas Abdul Razak and swimmer Amanda Lim are proud to be part of this historic trail.

"I'm really excited, and I'm really looking forward to the Games," said Silas, torchbearer for the Youth Olympic Torch Relay.

"I've been to Athens, Greece in Ancient Olympia. Back here again, I was feeling the excitement that I was feeling in Greece too. I'm looking forward to seeing the torch again," said Lim, torchbearer for the Youth Olympic Torch Relay.

The flame will light the cauldron on August 14 at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the start of the inaugural Youth Olympics.

Bah humbug

In a word, Youth Olympics Games = FAIL. This image pretty much sums it up:

...but Alex Au sums up the whole pathetic story well:

http://yawningbread.wordpress.com/20...olympic-games/

And remember that at S$387m, every Singaporean taxpayer is forking out about S$100 for this show

Catch The Excitement Of Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games - Sale Of Opening Ceremony Tickets
Quote:
Tickets to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010) Opening Ceremony are available for public sale from Monday, 2 August 2010 at 9.00am Singapore time (GMT +8).

The Opening Ceremony will be held on Saturday, 14 August 2010 at The Float@Marina Bay. Tickets priced at $200, $120 and $80 are available through the Singapore 2010 website (www.singapore2010.sg/tickets), ticketing hotline (+65 6348 2010) or from the Singapore Indoor Stadium Authorised Ticket Counter only.

The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Opening Ceremony will be a dazzling show of music and colour showcasing local talents and over 5,000 young performers. The spectacular opening show will be a treat for the senses with multimedia showcase, elaborate costumes, and bold performances with fire and water elements in the "Playing with Fire" and the "Reflecting Pool" performances.

Tickets to the Closing Ceremony on Thursday, 26 August 2010 at The Float@Marina Bay are also available. Tickets are priced at $80, $40 and $15.

Following the Singapore 2010 Opening and Closing Ceremony ticket balloting and payment collection exercise which concluded on 7 June, a proportion of tickets which were not transacted are now open for public sale. This allows people who did not participate in, or were not familiar with, the balloting exercise an opportunity to buy tickets and join in the occasion to celebrate the opening and closing of the first-ever Youth Olympic Games (YOG). Each ticket is also a Singapore 2010 DBS Visa Prepaid Companion Card1 which serves as the world's first "all in-one" event ticket card that can be used for admission into the venue,
payment and transit.

Update on Ticket Sales to Competition Sessions

Ticket sales to the first Youth Olympic Games have been brisk where more than 160,000, or more than 60% of tickets for sale2, are currently unavailable. Of the 158 ticketed competition sessions at 16 competition venues3, tickets to many sessions of Basketball, Diving, Equestrian, Fencing, Modern Pentathlon, and Swimming4 are no longer available.

Tickets that are selling fast are Athletics and Gymnastics, with less than 100 tickets available for all sessions of Archery, Boxing, Handball, Shooting and Taekwondo. The sporting competition tickets are priced at S$10 (Preliminaries), S$15 (Quarter Finals/ Semi Finals) and S$30 (Finals)5. Each ticket purchased is accompanied by a Singapore 2010 DBS Visa Prepaid Companion Card.

We encourage ticket holders to check the website, www.singapore2010.sg for the latest schedules before proceeding to the competition venues.

"I encourage you to take an active part in Singapore's historic event as we host the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games and cheer the Young Olympians from over

1 Singapore 2010 DBS Visa Prepaid Companion Card entitles each spectator to a maximum of four Mass Rapid Transit train rides and unlimited bus rides on the day of the event for every ticket purchased.

2 The total number of tickets available for sale is 245,000 after taking into account seats for accreditated personnel and broadcast operations.

3 There are 18 competition venues in total, admission is free at National Sailing Centre and East Coast Park.

4 Qualifying rounds for athletes recently concluded and the National Olympic Committees (NOCs) are in the midst of sending in their ticket orders. The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee
(SYOGOC) has set aside limited inventory for NOCs as part of our specialty client group, and more tickets may be released for public sale after all NOC ticket orders have been processed.

5 With the exception of Football, where Jalan Besar Stadium is the only competition venue that has both covered and un-covered seating galleries, tickets to the un-covered gallery would be at S$5 (Preliminaries),
S$7.50 (Quarter Finals/Semi Finals) and S$15 (Finals).

I have to admit, that's a very impressive opening ceremony there. And great use of the water as well. Finally an event that doesn't just stick to a regular football field size platform. I'm glad that they've put some real effort into this.

Although for the budget, that's another story...

Yes it was spectacular! Although it was obivious Darren Choy would be the one to light the ''lighthouse''.

Yes the opening ceremony though cannot be compared to Beijing's ceremony in 2008, I am very impressed with today's performance, especially the lighting up of the cauldron. I am soo proud to be a Singaporean.

I am sure many Singaporeans are proud of this event. I am happy that they choose Darren Choy to light the Cauldron. He probably the most talented representing Team Singapore.

Here's a photo you won't see in the Straits Times:

That's taken during the opening ceremony, when there was a concert on the south bank of the river, attended by approximately zero people.
