Historic Victory
Quote:
It took no more than a minute for the final score of the boys’ floor exercise to flash on the screens at the Bishan Sports Hall.

But it must have felt like a lifetime for Cuba’s Ernesto Vila Sarria and his coach Manuel Morales, who had his arm around his charge’s broad shoulders.

They needed Zhu Xiaodong’s score to be lower than Ernesto’s 14.575 effort. The Chinese gymnast, who was the only man left standing between Ernesto and the gold – the first Olympic gymnastics medal for Cuba – had just completed his routine.

There was nothing left for any of the gymnasts to do but wait.

Soon, Xiaodong’s score of 14.3 popped up, which meant he had to settle for third place. Ukraine’s Oleg Stepko (14.5) took the silver, and the gold went to Ernesto.

“I was just waiting to burst into celebration,” said Ernesto.

Yet, few would have predicted this result after the Cuban qualified for the eight-boy final in seventh place with a score of 14.1.

But the likes of favourites Yuya Kamoto and Sam Oldham faltered.

Japan’s Yuya, who took the boys’ all-around gold on Wednesday, fell on his first tumbling pass, and Britain’s Sam was penalised for stepping out of bounds.

But Ernesto rose to the occasion. He floored the rest of the field – scoring the highest points for both difficulty and execution.

A teary Morales said that their high-risk strategy had paid off.

“This is a very emotional moment,” said Morales, before pausing to collect himself. “It was a difficult routine. We gave it everything.

“We would have left our heads on the floor for a medal.”

With a gold in the bag, Ernesto is looking for more medals when he competes in the high bar and parallel bars finals today.

“This gold means a lot to me. Hopefully, I’ll be able to build on this result,” he said. “This is just the start for gymnastics in Cuba.”

YOG closing ceremony promises to be spectacular & reflective

SINGAPORE : After the opening bang, Thursday's closing ceremony for the Youth Olympic Games promises to be no less spectacular as well as reflective - as the 3,600 athletes bid farewell to Singapore.

The youths are putting their best foot forward for a celebration billed as "the biggest party" on The Float at Marina Bay.

Some 2,000 youths are involved in the closing ceremony, about half the numbers for the opening. But organisers say the show will be no less grand - celebrating the 'Spirit of Youth'.

Ivan Heng, creative director, Opening & Closing Ceremonies, 2010 Youth Olympic Games, said: "Everyone expects us to top the opening, but I think we've outdone ourselves.

"To be honest, I think the closing ceremony will be an opportunity for us to gather, to reflect on what has happened and what does it mean to have participated in this new chapter in Olympic history.

"There will be flames and fireworks and fountains and all those things but underneath it is a very, very simple message - that actually this closing is a beginning for all the athletes because our hope is that they will all carry this flame which will be extinguished, within themselves."

One of the changes to expect is that the reflection pool will make way for a solid stage circling the floating platform.

There will also be a tribute to the 20,000 volunteers of the Games.

Organisers said all soundtracks in the Closing Ceremony have been rearranged for an up-tempo beat and more than 500 dancers from O School and School of Dance will join hands "to give the party rhythm and groove".

One of the highlights of the 100-minute show is a segment by 800 students from St Theresa's Convent.

Nathania Ong, a 12-year-old girl who has been performing since she was four, will sing Singapore's National Anthem during the ceremony.

Since the closing ceremony is on a weekday, care is taken to ensure smooth traffic.

Ishak Ismail, chairman, Opening & Closing Ceremonies, 2010 Youth Olympic Games, said: "In the opening ceremony, we did role play rehearsals for 3,600 athletes coming into the area.

"We also did modelling for actual number of buses which are going to transfer from YOV (Youth Olympic Village) and we took the opportunity of the combined rehearsals on Wednesday to fill the stands with invited spectators and volunteers.

"So we've done this on a weekday knowing that actually it's the first time that Singapore hosts a big major event in the heart of the city, on the weekday, without a public holiday."

"So this is a very conscious decision of how to practice, what details to look out for, so when we are doing an opening ceremony rehearsal, we were looking out for data, to be used for the closing ceremony."

The kids have been rehearsing since May and come Thursday, they will be giving the performance of their lifetime. This time round, the focus will be on the youth athletes who will take centre stage at the floating platform.

The best moments of the Games will be featured in a multimedia projection and all this will culminate in a celebration concert for performers, athletes and spectators.

The closing ceremony will be held at The Float at Marina Bay on August 26 at 7.30pm.

Tickets for the show are sold out, but organisers said limited tickets for unclaimed seats will be released on the day.

Hope they stay this way, and they should have a good future. =)

Cubs beat Montenegro 4-1

SINGAPORE midfielder Hanafi Mohamed Akbar finally broke his duck in the Youth Olympic Games football competition as the Singapore Cubs defeated Montenegro 4-1 on Wednesday night to clinch the bronze medal.

Hanafi, who failed to find the net in Singapore's three earlier matches, scored twice in front of a crowd that was visibly smaller than the 6,000-strong throng that had packed Jalan Besar Stadium to watch Singapore beat Montenegro 3-2 last Tuesday and lose 0-2 to Haiti in the semi-finals on Sunday.

But this time, the fans were rewarded for their unwavering faith in the Singapore youngsters.

And Singapore responded appropriately by taking just six minutes to break the deadlock through Hanafi, who picked up a pass and brushed aside his markers before slotting the ball past Montenegro goalkeeper Marko Kordic.

However, the Cubs' joy was shortlived. Two minutes after the goal, skipper Jeffrey Lightfoot suffered a bad cut on his head and had to be substituted.

The situation worsened two minutes later when Montenegro equalised through Jovan Baosic. The defender was unmarked when a freekick was floated in and had all the time in the world to power his header past Singapore keeper Fashah Rosedin.

The match ended 1-1 at half-time.

Hanafi then scored his second goal of the match and tournament five minutes after the break when he received Bryan Neubronner's cross at the edge of the Montenegro box and slammed his shot past Kordic.

Singapore made it 3-1 in the 56th minute after they were awarded a penalty. Referee Norbert Hauata had apparently spotted a Montenegro player tugging at the jersey of one of the Singapore players and pointed to the spot.

Midfielder Ammirul Mazlan then sent Kordic the wrong way to give Singapore a comfortable lead.

Ammirul then made it a night to remember for the Cubs and the Jalan Besar faithful when he headed Hanafi's 65th-minute freekick into the Montenegro net to make it 4-1.

thanks all volunteers, participants and everyone who has contributed in one way or another. It was better than what I'd expected. Hope to have such events again.

Made in Singapore, for the world
by Leonard Thomas leonard@mediacorp.com.sg
05:55 AM Aug 27, 2010

As the clocked ticked down to Aug 14, no one knew exactly how it was going to turn out. There had never been a Youth Olympic Games before.

Only two years ago, this tiny island state had pipped one of the great old cities of the world, Moscow, for the right to host the inaugural Games. There were those who felt the International Olympic Committee had too much faith in Singapore; others accused it of taking a huge gamble.

Moscow could certainly have pulled it off, but this was always about giving smaller nations and cities a chance to show what they could do.

And as hosts of the first Youth Olympic Games, Singapore has answered the call with a magnificent show.

With athletes aged between 14 and 18 years, critics moaned the lack of star power at the Youth Olympic Games. Some questioned the wisdom of organising a multi-sport Games that so nearly mirrored the image of the Summer Olympics.

To their credit, the organisers ignored the negative vibes, put their heads down and worked every day, brick by brick, determined to succeed and do the nation proud.

As the final crackle of fireworks shot into the night sky to light up the country's ever-changing downtown skyline last night at the closing ceremony at The Float@Marina Bay, the city of Nanjing, in the east of China, will have much to do as hosts of the second Youth Olympics to match the Singapore Games.

Nearly 3,500 foreign athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees lived in the Youth Olympic Village at the Nanyang Technological University - and they enjoyed themselves.

Friendships were formed here.

US Virgin Islands sailor Ian Barrows, gold medallist in the boys' Byte CII event, danced at the disco in the Village, happily mingled with athletes from other nations, and will go home with a bunch of photographs.

Christelle Guela from the Central African Republic, in pain after her track event, was helped off by Djiboutian athlete Saredo Abdi. The two, once strangers, are now firm friends.

At the end of 12 days of official competition, 13 new junior world records were set.

Rising stars like Jamaica's 100m sprinter Odean Skeen, Bolivian footballer Rodrigo Mejido, Cuban boxer Lenier Eunice Pero, and China's swimmer Tang Yi - surely the Athlete of the Games with six gold medals - will soon be ready to show off their considerable talent at the highest level.

IOC president Dr Jacques Rogge wanted the Youth Olympics to teach young athletes with big dreams the values of Excellence, Friendship and Respect. These Games have delivered on all counts.

Winners have come from all over the world, big and small nations have heard their anthems played at the various medal ceremonies, many national flags have been raised.

Volunteers have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth running of the event.

Most of all for Singapore, the Games have united the nation.

After some early hiccups, ordinary Singaporeans embraced the Youth Olympics by flooding the various athletic venues, none more so than at Jalan Besar Stadium, where the football team captured the imagination of the public.

Ordinary folk of all races, from every walk of life, roared together as they fell in love with the Cubs.

A whole new generation of Singaporeans will now appreciate sport, and recognise its importance.

The Youth Olympic Games is here to stay. Host Singapore is a big reason for that. It has been a thrilling and unforgettable experience.
