The Hague / La Haye / Den Haag -> City of peace and justice

Yesterday I went to visit the city of peace and justice. I had been there a few times before but didn't take a whole tour. It's my favourite city in the Netherlands, it has the beauty of Amsterdam and the skyline part of Rotterdam: a great mix of both! The Hague used to be the Dutch capital, the government is still located in The Hague (quite unique since Amsterdam is the capital). All embassies are located in The Hague and also the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia, Peace Palace, International Criminal Court and more can be found in The Hague. Enjoy!

1 Belgian architecture located at the Stationsweg near train station Den Haag HS;

2 Lovely big doors in a complex at the Stationsweg, you wouldn't say it's a poor neighborhood;

3 Nice terrace at Huijgenspark, on the right (upper corner) you can see the Strijkijzer tower;

4 De Stationsweg runs into Chinatown The Hague;

5 Small but lovely old buildings at the Stille Veerkade near Chinatown;

6 Chinatown The Hague, it isn't big but it's nice to be walking around;

7 Big Chinese store, I'm guessing it's a supermarket;

8 A hidden mosque, this used to be a synagogue;

9 Shoppingdistrict Haagsche Bluf. This used to be an ugly full of concrete looking part of the city wich was bought by a rich guy. He transformed this part into 3 styles: old Dutch + modern, English & Italian. Every facade (yes it's just a facade) costs 1 million euro's to built. Remember this was all constructed just 10 years ago. All facades of old Dutch buildings can be found elsewhere in the city of The Hague;

10 Terrace at the Haagsche Bluf, as you can see the facade in the back looks like it has been around longer than 10 years;

11 This Italian tower is also part of the Haagsche Bluf (quite weird);

12 The second cityhall of The Hague is located in the old city center;

13 The Oude Molstraat, a medieval street with buildings that where constructed later on. At the end there is a small see through towards the Noordeinde palace;
image hosted on flickr

14 Noordeinde palace (on the left) where the queen works. On the right you can see the Willem van Oranje statue;
image hosted on flickr

15 Lovely big gate at the Noordeinde palace, the queen wasn't at work, if she would the orange flag would be up;
image hosted on flickr

16 Greek flag at the Greek embassy, located next to the Maroccan embassy;
image hosted on flickr

17 Plein 1813, to celebrate the independance of the Netherlands. Plein (square) 1813 is surrounded by embassies and offices;
image hosted on flickr

18 The Alexanderstraat seen from the statue on Plein 1813. At the end you can see another one of the The Hague cityhalls;
image hosted on flickr

19 The Anna Paulownasquare, this used to be part of her own garden. She is still sitting in her garden, as a statue on the seats;
image hosted on flickr

20 The library of the royal family (the family name is still on the building, Oranje Nassau);
image hosted on flickr

21 A tram runs trough the city center;
image hosted on flickr

22 The Passage, a unique structure in the Netherlands. Amsterdam also used to have one;
image hosted on flickr

23 The 3 point of the Passage;

24 Underground tramstop located below underground shops and a underground parking garages with roundabouts;
image hosted on flickr

25 The Grote Marktstraat, mainstreet of The Hague city center. This used to be a street open for cars and trams (just 10 years ago);
image hosted on flickr

26 Part of the The Hague skyline seen from the Pathe cinema;
image hosted on flickr

27 The current The Hague cityhall, one of my favourite Dutch buildings;
image hosted on flickr

28 An open staircase located at the outside;
image hosted on flickr

29 The cityhall seen from the 12th floor;
image hosted on flickr

30 I also captured a red car on the Utrechtsebaan highway;
image hosted on flickr

31 The Adelheidstraat, I loved the atmosphere in this street;
image hosted on flickr

32 Shadow of a tram viaduct on the Prinses Beatrixlaan;

33 The nice 'netkous' structure seen from below;

34 Centre Court highrise next to the 'netkous';

Hope you liked my pictures At least I enjoyed my day in The Hague!

I like the contrast between the more traditional parts of the city and your new "La Defence" area which is very impressive and individual.

Quite impressive city. Both old architecture and modern highrises are beautiful.

Probably my favorite dutch city.

Let's get to part 2 Thanks for all your comments

35 Let's start with the building I also started part 1 with, the apartment complex;
image hosted on flickr

36 Don't know wich canal this is, on the right you have the Dunne Bierkade (slim beerwharf) and behind me Huijgenspark;
image hosted on flickr

37 Closed 'hofje' at the end of the Stille Veerkade;
image hosted on flickr

38 Lovely stained glass window in the Bijenkorf mall. Every floor has it's own theme (sports, industry etc.);
image hosted on flickr

39 One of those towers is probably of the Boterwaag in the city center of The Hague;
image hosted on flickr

40 Willem van Oranje statue in front of the Noordeinde palace;
image hosted on flickr

41 The Zeestraat (sea street) wich is close to Plein 1813. Lots of embassies are located in this area;

42 Reflection of the cityhall into the Dutch Dance theater;

43 Inside the cityhall again;

44 And we close with this cleaner at tramstop Ternoot. He saw my camera and wanted me to take his picture, I couldn't refuse ;

That's it for this time! Next time a few pictures of Scheveningen, seaside resort of The Hague!

Great photos. I've never been in The Hague. It looks like a very nice city with a nice combination of old and new architecture.
