Indeed, the germanic nations had a writing system several centuries before Slavs, having borrowed the idea from Romans. But did it spark a cultural development? No.

What is it with these Germans and always trying to destroy Slavic culture? They always go east. If it's not Moscow, then it's Warsaw.

It was me who brought the Norse stave church into this thread about the old Moscow, and I am almost sorry I did, when seeing what kind of contest of slavs vs. vikings, this thread has evolved into.

What I really intended, was to show one of the many connections between our old cultures. How people travelled and brought with them a little piece of themselves where they settled and traded their goods.

For instance, here in Sweden a water faucet is called a "kran" and it also happen to have the very same name in polish! On the surface, it could seem odd, but historic swedish interaction with polish culture might explain this. The net result is that perhaps sweden is more polish today and vice versa. We all influence each other and every talk about a "pure" culture is really not the case here.

I have read great russian litterature all the way from Nikolai Gogol to Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn, and I am awestruck by their writtings. It has changed my view of russians and russian culture for ever and to the better! I hoped that the Norse stave church would spark some reflections about our many interconnections, in stead it evolved into them vs. us.

How about something more in this thread about the old Moscow?
