The Park opens seven-star hotel in Hyderabad

The Park Hotels, promoted by Apeejay Surrendra Park Hotels Private Limited, on Thursday launched its seven-star hotel in Hyderabad, built with an investment of Rs 340 crore.

Speaking to the media, Apeejay chairperson Priya Paul said the Hyderabad project was its ninth boutique hotel. The first green building hotel, with 270 rooms, has a gold rating from Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The company is targeting Rs 100 crore revenues from the new venture in a year.


The group plans to launch a 250-room hotel at Pune in January 2013 and another 250-room one in Kolkata in 2014. It would also launch one luxury resort at Jaipur with 200 rooms. In all, it has 1,145 rooms.

Paul said the company would spend about Rs 1,000 crore in the next three to five years for developing greenfield projects and managing hotels. It would also look at developing properties in Mumbai and Goa. “The hospitality industry will be in a sweet spot from 2012,”' she said, adding most hotels during last year saw an occupancy rate of less than 55 per cent.

Skidmore Owings and Merril, which designed Burj Khalifa in Dubai, has designed the hotel’s exterior cladding.

ARPL ventures into hospitality industry through Accor Hospitality

Hyderabad based Agra Residency Pvt. Ltd. (ARPL) has forayed into the hospitality industry by signing a Joint Venture (JV) agreement with Accor Hospitality. Through this agreement, Accor Hospitality will manage Mercure Hotels Abids, which will be officially launched on May 16, 2010 and will be a ‘Pure Vegetarian’ property. This property will be the third property managed by Accor in Hyderabd, after Novotel Hyderabad & Hyderabad International Convention Centre and Novotel Hyderabad Airport.

Mercure Hotels Abids will be positioned as a boutique hotel, which will offer 82 rooms (55 Superior rooms, 19 Privilege rooms and eight Suites), a restaurant (Abids Bistro), a bar (Scotchman Bar) and five meeting rooms with capacity of 600-800 pax. The property will be mainly targeting corporate clients along with leisure travellers.

Speaking exclusively with Hospitality Biz about the concept of a vegetarian hotel, Rajesh Gopalkrishnan, Hotel Manager, Mercure Hyderabad Abids said, “With western countries becoming health conscious by going vegetarian and with sizable population of vegetarians in Hyderabad, the concept of ‘Pure Vegetarian’ hotel has a lot of potential. In this property, we are not only going to offer Indian but will also offer a mix of South East Asian cuisine for vegetarians. We are also going to target wedding segment through this specialty as most Indians prefer vegetarian cuisine during weddings and religious and traditional events.”

The Park, the first seven-star hotel in Hyderabad. The lobby is not at the entrance but on the third floor. Designed by Skidmore Owings and Merrill (it also designed the Burj Khalifa) the Park has an all glass facade, sheated by 6,200 panels of composite aluminium. The result:

The park turns into a green building that uses .8 watts per sft as the glass lets in the light and the aluminum bounces off the heat. The hotel brims with green ideas. The lift automatically uses lower energy when fewer people use and ramps up the power when more people get in.


Not just the environment, Priya Paul of the Apeejay group who was involved right from the beginning till now, has incorporated cultural features she saw as defining the city. That is the reason for the presence of Kalamkari artefacts and motifs from tholubommalata in the hotel. While the rooms have a canvas with tholubommalata motif, one of the lounges in the lobby has a ceiling covered with Kalamkari work.

Outside the lobby on the third floor is the swimming pool that blends into the infinity of the Hussainsagar Lake. The horizon blending sight is a delight makes you wonder where the water is disappearing as you listen to the recessed all-weather Bose speakers pumping in the music.

The Rs. 340 crore Park has 270 rooms and plans are on anvil for a luxury retail mall beside the melange of restaurants and watering holes.

Red Fox Hotel - Hyderabad

Work on the new five-star hotel project at Begumpet

Taj GVK Hotels and Resorts Limited posted a 54 per cent increase in net profit to Rs 12.17 crore for the quarter ended March 31, 2010, from Rs 7.9 crore during the same period last year. Revenues during the quarter stood at Rs 63.34 crore, up 11.23 per cent from Rs 56.94 crore last year.

For the full year 2009-10, net profit was at Rs 36.26 crore, down 31.27 per cent from Rs 52.76 crore last year. Revenues were at Rs 229.25 crore, down 3.76 per cent from Rs 238.21 crore.

The company said its hotels at Hyderabad and Chandigarh achieved occupancy levels of around 65 per cent and the new hotel -Taj Mount Road - at Chennai touched 44 per cent. It has plans to enter the value for money segment through the ‘Ginger’ brand in Andhra Pradesh and Bangalore.

Work on the new five-star hotel project at Begumpet here is on schedule. The project with 189 rooms is expected to be operational by 2011. The company is also building an additional car parking facility at the hotel.
