If you look at the CMDA Master Plan for the next several years , the transport budget alone runs into more than hundred thousand crores. So if not Central hopefully they receive funding from Japan or else where.

BTW the tamil news says "90% Nidhi Ketkapattuladhu" . It could mean they have requested funds . "Demanded funds" could add a new meaning to the whole sentence .

can members like kannan give more details on the fate of Adambakkam lake? In 2005 some action was taken to clear the tank bund of encroachments but it was stopped by legal action taken by the opposite partymen. The next govt took some action in clearing the encroachments for the IRR bridge and then the stalemate started in handing over the site required for MRTS station. The then govt issued eviction notices in 2009. It is still a stalemate. On one side the projects that are to come up under JNNURM are not taken up. On the other side there is no sign of cleaning and maintaining this only under ground water rechage. There was no action on the eviction notices from both the previous and present governments.

Sir, although you did not realize it, what you wrote clearly illustrates why India has some of the most stinking cities in the World. It is this attitude of expecting someone else will come and clean your shit for you; and expressing that attitude with sanctimonious and intellectually superior sounding words.

@Nirm why do you bother? did you do your bit to clean the river? Then go bury your head in its crappy silt. Or turn yourself into Nirma and clean the goddamed river.

If you have this kind of attitude our politicians can loot for atleast till 2050 without any problem as we used to fight among ourselves, when i see you discussions i get one comedy scene in my mind

Parthiban gives lottery ticket worth 1 crore to vadivelu and a fat guy

He asks what they will do with that money

Vadivelu: Buy cows, pigs, buffaloes, hens etc and establish a poultry
Fat Guy: I buy lots of acres and grow farm
Parhtiban: vadivelu how you will feed your poultry
Vadivelu : I will let them into this big man's farm

They will start fighting with each other

Parthiban will tell at end that lottery is banned

Canal repair works set to begin

Quote:
After a gap of over five years, the Water Resources Department is set to take up repair works in the canals that transport water to the reservoirs used for drinking water supply to city.

The Department has obtained a fund of Rs.10.89 crore from the State government to repair the damaged portions of the canal. Officials of the WRD said the work was essential to prevent silting up of the canal and also arrest seepage.

The Department has identified several points in the 25.2 km-long Kandaleru-Poondi canal, between the inter-state border at Uthukottai and Poondi reservoir, which are in dire need of repair.

The vulnerable portions of the canal's embankment would be provided with concrete lining and canal bed would also be concretised wherever there is a need for repair. Earlier, the Satya Sai Trust had undertaken similar works in some portions of the canal during 2007.

However, the WRD would implement the project of repairing the entire stretch after many years at a cost of Rs.4.75 crore. Similarly, the link canal running 25-km between Poondi and Chembarambakkam reservoirs would also be repaired.

Besides repairing the 21.5 km stretch of feeder canal that branches out from link canal to Red Hills reservoir, the road along the canal would also be relaid. The works would ensure that the water bodies receive the maximum volume of water discharged from other reservoirs, an official said.

At present, the water realised at the reservoirs is only 65-70 per cent of the volume discharged owing to damage in the canals.

The water realisation would be increased by a minimum of 10 per cent on completion of the project. The canals have a capacity to carry 1,000 cubic feet of water per second, the official added.

The project would be taken up in two or three months as the KP canal is still receiving Krishna water from Kandaleru reservoir.

Poondi reservoir has so far received 4,000 thousand cubic feet of water since the water discharge in June. On Friday, the combined storage of four reservoirs in Red Hills, Poondi, Cholavaram and Chembarambakkam stood at 7,237 mcft against the capacity of 11,057 mcft, officials said.

The de-silting and strengthening of embankments of the Adyar river are set to be taken up in about 300 acres as part of the second phase of the restoration project. Mangrove plantations will also come up along the river to the Thiru-Vi-Ka bridge in Adyar. A consultant is to be appointed shortly.

The Tamil Nadu Urban Infrastructure Financial Services Limited (TNUIFSL), the implementing agency, has sought permission from the public works department for access to the estuary. It will also seek coastal regulation zone clearance from the Union ministry of environment and forests. "This marks the closure of the phase-I of the project that saw the creation of the Tholkkapia Poonga (Adyar Poonga)," said a senior government official.

A public interest litigation filed by the Consumer Action Group, a city-based non-government organisation, forced successive state governments to take a re-look at the development of the area. The DMK government formulated a master plan and took up the restoration of the Adyar creek and developed the Tholkkapia Poonga even as a Madras high court-appointed monitoring committee comprising environmentalists and others kept an eye on the programme. The 58-acre creek, between Greenways Road and the Santhome Causeway, has now become a model for eco-restoration projects in South India.

PWD sources said the demarcation of 650 metres of the river mouth had been completed recently with the help of Mylapore taluk officials. de-silting had been stopped in April this year after protests from the fishing community and environmentalists.

The second phase, covering areas from the Santhome Causeway up to the Thiru-Vi-Ka Bridge, will, however, not include dredging the river, said government sources.

"Removing the sludge and allowing tidal activity is the foremost concern. That apart, barriers such as mangroves to protect the eco-system will also be part of the plan to strengthen bunds," said an official associated with the project. The estuarine wetland was until recently a habitat of hundreds of migratory bird and aquatic species.

Madras Naturalist Society president K V Sudhakar said any project with plans to protect the estuary was welcome. "The society had recorded 200 species of birds in the estuary years agoFlamingo and Golden Plover have now become a rarity," he said

Experts say the entire estuary has undergone severe environmental degradation over the years. Particularly in the last one decade, dumping of construction debris and garbage on the edges of Quibble Island and Srinivasapuram has caused heavy pollution. The floating garbage weakens the eco-system, while gallons of sewage let out by upstream areas cause grave concern among the environmentalists
