There was some new a few months ago about the HSCTC project along the banks of the Adyar River - Kewl Batty had posted excellent, detailed plans on that project..That seems to have gone quiet? Unless that is taken up I doubt if the Saidapet slums along the river will be removed..

Regarding HSCTC, that Final feasibility has been approved by the government and the DPR is underway. I guess it'll get over by a month or two. And I don't think I can get more updates on it anymore. Coz I juzz moved to Amsterdam.

CHENNAI: The Water Resources Department is gearing up to carry out desilting of waterways under its control by September as part of the monsoon preparedness work. Officials of the department said the work on various stretches of the waterways across the city would begin by September 15. For this, the government would be sanctioning nearly Rs.2 crore. The project would cover canals that have not yet been taken up as part of improvement works under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission. The department usually executes monsoon preparedness work at a cost of Rs.4 crore every year. However, this year the expenditure would be half of that as development of macro drains, under JNNURM, is in progress, they said. Besides the stretch of central Buckingham Canal from Basin Bridge to Madhya Kailash junction, the canals in Velachery and Adambakkam would also be desilted. Surplus courses of Porur lake covering an 8-km stretch in areas such as Gerugambakkam and Kolappakkam and Chembarambakkam reservoir would also be desilted. The south Buckingham canal up to Muttukadu would be cleared of obstructions. Materials such as sand bags would be placed at vulnerable points in Red Hills reservoir, Korattur anaicut, Tamaraipakkam and along the Adyar river near Jaffarkhanpet and Nandambakkam bridges, apart from removing aquatic weeds, an official said. Waterways in suburbs such as the 3.4-km-long Thanikachalam Nagar drain in Madhavaram and Pattaravakkam canal in Ambattur industrial estate would be covered under the project to prevent inundation during monsoon. Some portions of the Cooum river along Paruthipattu near Thiruverkadu would be widened to its original width as part of the project, the official said. The works would be completed in 15 days and the waterways would be monitored for flooding till the end of north east monsoon, the official added.

Coovam - Responsiblity..
One of my friend told that, Kamarajar should hold responsible for the current state of Coovam who earlier asked all industrial units / sewegaes to leave it to coovam instead of contruting the sewage treatment plant , which was so costlier those days.....
How far its true ? |

There is a bigger task ahead than just hanging a dead albatross. This sorta debates or research take us nowhere. My appeal to you my friend, instead of finding a person or party to hang the blame, let us focus on getting it clean..Also remember degradation of a river into sewer is not a one day or one time incident like Bhopal gas tragedy.. its been sliding the slippery slope for many years and decades.. more than one reason exists.. Besides lets assume you found a dead person responsible.. how does it resolve the current sad plight of the river. |

The only lake within city limits
image hosted on flickr
![]() Velachery lake is the only lake within city limits. The successive govts plan to make this lake a tourist spot by installing boating facilities etc, but none have started. The following can be done to beautify the lake: 1) Install boating facilities 2) The Lake View Road adjacent to the lake can be improved and build a cycle lane for the bicycle riders. 3) Water should be cleaned. 4) Canal works should get complete before working on the lake. Any meaningful development of Velachery lake has to be integrated with the neighboring swamps as they are interlinked. With these lands becoming prime engines of growth, the future of the lake depends a lot on understanding the role it plays in South Chennai.. not just for people hopefully. The critical issues will be - Deter land encroachment - Minimize waste discharge into the lake/marsh (both solid and liquid) - Increasing awareness of both the resource as well as its proper use - Proper zoning of land so that random development doesnt detrack the intended goal - If properly developed like ArunSankar mentioned it can be a valuable addition to Chennai's hotspots. |

Mass cleaning of Cooum river begins
http://www.hindu.com/2010/09/10/stor...1055080100.htm
The Chennai Corporation on Thursday started mass cleaning of the Cooum river as part of the restoration project of Chennai's Rivers. Inaugurating the cleaning programme, Mayor M.Subramanian said, “Corporation workers will clean an estimated 871 tonnes of solid waste dumped along the river in a month.” The Cooum flows through three corporation zones – Kilpauk, Nungambakkam and Ice House – in the city for a length of 16 km. The estimated garbage in Kilpauk along the 6.5-km stretch of the Cooum is 550 tonnes. Around 150 tonnes of garbage would be collected from the 2.9-km-long banks of the river in Nungambakkam and 171 tonnes at Ice House. At least 70,000 residents are living along the Cooum in the three zones. A total of 55 tonnes waste is being collected in the areas by the civic body per day. Over 550 workers are part of the cleaning drive. Corporation workers have started awareness campaigns for people residing along the Cooum, he added. National Service Scheme volunteers from Loyola College were part of the awareness programme in slums such as MGR Nagar, Jothiammal Nagar, Nedunchezhian Nagar, Pallavan Nagar, Makkal Thottam, Kathiravan Colony and Moovendar Nagar. Pointing to the efforts of the civic body to clear garbage from small lanes using tricycles, Mr.Subramanian asked the people to avoid dumping waste in the river. ---------------------------------------- Good Start and intentions i guess.

CHENNAI: Colourful sail boats will soon ride on the Cooum river, announced Kanthimathi Nathan, a nodal officer of the Cooum River Restoration Trust. Speaking at a seminar on Environment Protection Policies' which was held as part of the India International Sailing Regatta, Kanthimathi Nathan said, "By desilting the mouth of the river and allowing tidal exchange into the river, we shall soon be able to flush out the pollutants and create enough flow of water to enable sailing at least up to Chintadripet. Currently, the only spot where sailing is possible is at Muthukadu." Speaking later to TOI, K Phanindra Reddy, the member secretary of Cooum River Trust said, "The whole process of creating free flowing water up to Chintadripet will take at least 3 years." Nathan, the nodal officer admitted that there was currently a problem in completely desilting the mouth of the river. "It can't be done in one go," he said. "Silt will accumulate again. The process has to be repeated several times before the mouth of the river will be considerably free." However, it will take at least six years to clean up the entire river, he added. ... |
