tod, great finds!! Howrah & Sealdah need a overhaul to match this followed by development to the other key terminals such as Majerhat, Shalimar etc ( which I believe are also in the pipeline)

pls post this in the Railways thread ( if you have not already done so).

"not anymore" as the metro has reached beyond tallygunj. Out of 8.7 kms. of elevated stretch from Tallygunj to Garia, about 6 kms. will be operational by next month.

String of big railway projects slated to come up in East

Quote:
KOLKATA: With Mamata Banerjee formally getting the railway portfolio, a string of big-ticket projects are slated to come up in the East.

Top on her agenda would be inauguration of the Rs 1,032-crore Metro Rail link upto Garia in the city’s southern fringes. The project was sanctioned during her stint as railway minister and got kicked off in 1999-2000 but has already suffered a huge time and cost overrun.

While trail runs are being conducted on a portion of the track, Metro Rail authorities are awaiting safety clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety before commencing commercial passenger services.

"Work on the project is now complete till the penultimate station, Briji. Trials runs are being conducted on the track with a single, battery-operated loco," a Metro Railway official said. The general manager is also conducting regular inspection in this section.

However, the commncement of service upto the terminal station, New Garia, continues to remain uncertain since land acquisition is yet to be concluded in the vicinity. While Metro Railway has already paid out compensation of Rs 69 lakh to affected parties, the Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality, though it is yet to be vacated. A special Metro Act was created for land acquisition. The cost overun has also affected the state government which has to bear one-third of the project cost.

Out of the six stations along the 8.7 km track, five will be on elevated tracks. Beyond Tollygunge, the successive stations will be Kudghat, Shahid Surya Sen (Bansdroni), Naktala, Garia Bazaar, Briji and New Garia.

The Telegraph on what it thinks Mamta should do as Rail Mantri

Quote:
Train of thought for Mamata
SANJAY MANDAL & ZEESHAN JAWED
Mamata Banerjee has homework to do

Mamata Banerjee has made it loud and clear that as railway minister her priority is Bengal. The big challenge for her in Calcutta is to rev up or revive the home projects that have lost steam or direction. Metro gives Mamata some “homework” ahead of her first day in office.

HOWRAH MAKEOVER
Meant to turn Howrah into a top-grade rail hub as part of a Rs 300,000-crore project for the modernisation of 20 stations across the country. The new-look station is to have superior infrastructure, separate departure and arrival halls, and elevators to take passengers from one platform to another.

Status report: The Railway Board has given the green signal to Eastern Railway’s construction wing. Process of awarding contracts for technical and architectural surveys is underway.

What Mamata needs to do: Fix a deadline for the project and ensure it is met.

People’s voice: “She will be doing lakhs of passengers a big favour by improving facilities at the station. It is a picture of chaos now,” says Prabhat Singh of Rishra.

TOLLY-GARIA METRO

The 8.7-km stretch from Tollygunge to Garia runs along Tolly’s Nullah and includes six stations, five of them elevated. The project is meant to be the communication lifeline for South 24-Parganas.

Status report: Sanctioned in 1999-2000, it remains mired in land dispute. Work has been stalled near Birji station, in Garia, over the demolition of the Rajpur-Sonarpur Municipality building.

What Mamata needs to do: Pressure the state government to demolish the building so that the unfinished work can be completed by year-end.

People’s voice: “We have been waiting for the Metro for a long time. We are tired of overcrowded and delayed suburban trains,” says trader Tarun Brahmachari.

DUM DUM-DAKSHINESWAR METRO

The 6.7-km stretch is to have three to four stations, with the state government bearing one-third of the project cost. Once completed, it will reduce the pressure on Sealdah station.

Status report: The feasibility survey for the project, proposed by Lalu Prasad in his last budget, has been completed. However, no commissioning date has been fixed.

What Mamata needs to do: Speed up the process and set a deadline.

People’s voice: “She must ensure this project does not go into cold storage like others,” says teacher Debleena Roy.

CHITPUR EXPANSION

Two additional platforms and more trains.

Status report: Construction underway.

What Mamata needs to do: Ensure that the terminal, officially known as Kolkata station, is not underutilised. Must pressure the state government into introducing better transport facilities to and from the station.

People’s voice: “The station is clean but transport and porter facilities need to be looked into,” says a passenger.

DUM DUM-AIRPORT LINK

A 3.2-km link that was Mamata’s brainchild and cost Rs 112 crore. Inaugurated in mid-2006, it hasn’t served its purpose because of poor planning. The new plan is to integrate it with Metro Railway.

Status report: Survey completed but project not yet sanctioned by the Railway Board.

What Mamata needs to do: Review flaws like the distance of the platform from the airport and co-ordinate with the Airports Authority of India to rectify them.

People’s voice: “The station is a 10-minute walk from the airport. Do they expect people to walk that far with luggage?” asks Richa Daga.

the list looks good. It is good that Chitpur expansion is on the radar, however more important are additional platforms for Howrah & Sealdah along with making Shalimar the hub for South bound trains. This can reduce the load on Howrah drastically.

According to the TMC chappie ( I think Sougata Roy or something) who remarked when Mamata & her team came to Kolkata after the swearing in - ebar unnotir bonna boye jabe, only time will tell if the city and the region will get washed away in the flood of development

The unnotir bonya reminds me of the "Shonibarer Chithi" "Byango Sonkolon" - I am sure Sajanikanto Das would have drawn a great image of unnotir bonya

Kolkata is a city of intelectuals who lacks vision. Otherwise no one in his right mind would link airport to Bongaon local train. Metro rail link to airport is getting as important as the airport runway itself. In some cities like jfk, ewr, Ams, Frg pax. are dispersed all over the metro area and downtown in half an hour. These trains are spcially designed to handle aiport luggage .Soon or later CCU needs such a system of rapid pax. dispersal. VIP road and Jessore rd are perpitually clogged. Once large widebodied planes like A380 starts to touch down the airport metro rail link will be extremely beneficial for rapid pax. dispersal.Current domestic terminal is already becoming notorious for jammed taxi stands outside.

Mamta's new stunt - Railway Ministry Vs

Hello All,

I have been following this thread very closely now and I am very much happy and exited to see the intrest generated through this thread for the various developmnet projects in Kolkata . Kolkata metro had always facinated me and I always want that Kolkata metro grow in length , breadth as Delhi Metro is growing . But it seems the bad M has taken vow to derail every project in Kolkata . She is expecting that she is earning brownie points , but the fact is she is pushing back Kolkata in time due to which no development effort is will get completed on time and Kolkata will bag behind all other cities in our country. Below is her new stunt.

Source: DNA
http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report...-metro_1270241

New Delhi: Railway minister Mamata Banerjee's attempts to grab all the brownie points from the Left Front government in West Bengal have brought her into a direct conflict with her cabinet colleagues in Delhi.
A prime example is her tug of war with urban development minister S Jaipal Reddy over the East-West Metro project in Kolkata, which Banerjee says should be transferred to the railway ministry.
The Rs4,876-crore project sanctioned by the Centre under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) proposes to link central Kolkata to its suburbs. The metro system is a 13.77-km stretch of underground and elevated tracks from Salt Lake to Howrah. Spanning 900 mt it would go 32 mt below the surface of the Hoogly river.
"As soon as Mamata took over as railway minister she asked Jaipal Reddy for details on the project," an urban development ministry source said.
Mamata argued the state government would not be able to handle "sensitive issues" related to the project. However, this claim appears hollow considering 53 out 56 acres of land needed for the project belongs to the government. From the remaining three acres of land a little over 400 people would be displaced, the source said.
Taking over the one of a kind project has become a prestige issue for both the Left Front and the Trinamool Congress. It's left to see whether Mamata's political compulsions will overrule that of her cabinet colleague.
