I used to use Kolkata suburban. The crowd is just "terrible" during peak hours. But it is OK(moderately crowded) during other times of the day. And Kolkata suburban carries passenger from far suburb like Kolaghat, Panskura, Burdwan, Kalyani, Krishnanagar, Ranaghat, Bongaon, Canning etc..

Yeah. Kolkata suburban serves areas much beyond its metropolitan region. In the map below, Sealdah, Howrah and Dum Dum appear so close to each other because of the vastness of the network. Somebody once posted a very good map of Kolkata suburban which looked much like a metro map but I guess it got left in the original thread after reorganization. Are all the trains serving these routes EMUs ?

This map was posted by KUSA and it is not that interesting.

lol. That's what I am thinking of. It was similar to the map you just posted above (or it could be the same one I am looking for. I don't remember that map exactly).

I was looking for information on suburban services. Everywhere, they talk of suburban lines but not services. I mean what are the frequencies on individual lines? Also is the line between bandel junction and naihati used by suburban trains? I mean do the run trains all the way to sealdah using that route? which route is most heavily used?
but I must say, Kolkata suburban looks so extensive from the maps. I would like to see proper interconnectivity map with metro and tram lines too!! |

Yes there are trains at regular interals (I am not sure of the frequencies) running from Sealdah to Bandel. using the line over the Jubliee Bridge.

As per my knowledge EMU trains run between Bandel Jn and Naihati Jn, at one or two hourly (or may be more) intervals to link the railways on either side of the river Hooghly. There were long distance trains(not sure what is going on nowdays, as my knowledge is a little bit old) starting from Sealdah Main to Bhagalpur, Katihar and other stations in Bihar via Naihati and of course Juibilee bridge. But there were no suburban trains via Naihati and Jubilee bridge from Sealdah at least till late eighties. I don't know whether this has changed or not nowadays.

There is no EMU trains between Sealdah-Bandel. Though we have feeder EMU service between Bandel and Naihati I believe. Heavily used routes should be: Howrah(Main): Bandel,Bardhaman Howrah(Chord): Bardhaman Howrah - Kolaghat, Panskura, Midnapur Howrah - Seoraphuli, Tarakeswar Sealdah(Main) - Barrackpore,Naihati,Ranaghat,Shantipur Sealdah(Main) - Bongaon, Duttapukur Almost all Sealdah south..
