'Renovated Kolkata airport by next year'
India Blooms News Service Kolkata, Feb 3 (IBNS): Union Minister of State for Urban Development Sougata Ray on Thursday said the renovated Kolkata airport will be ready by the end of 2011. "The new Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International (NSCBI) Airport will be ready by the end 0f this year. Besides there will be new air traffic control," he said. He was speaking at the two-day conference on 'Infrastructure: The Global Growth Driver', organised by Industrial and Engineering Products in association with Bharat Chamber of Commerce and Industry. Ray informed that "a flyover will be built between Park Circus and EM Bypass which will reduce the traffic problems in the city considerably." He said in Kolkata, one of the main aims of the government is to cover the entire city by Metro Rail connectivity. “Dum Dum-Barrackpore, Dum Dum-Barasat, Garia-Rajarhat, Joka-BBD Bag, are the metro inclusions, our idea is to cover whole of Kolkata in Metro network,” he said. He also said that the Bus Rapid Transit system will be implemented in the city to provide momentum and better connectivity to the bus transport in the city. “More work will come up after the political uncertainty comes to an end in the coming months," Ray said. Ray said the urban population has increased significantly, so is its challenge for the government to develop the infrastructure and provide basic facilities to the citizens. "Developing world is rapidly becoming urban and hence the areas face enormous challenge to provide basic infrastructure help like water supply, transport, food supply and others to the citizens," Ray said. He mentioned that the unregulated and haphazard growth in cities further strain the development which also leads to environmental degradation. "Some upgradation, waste management, road transport are essential; the current plan targets water supply, drainage, sewage and other facilities to reach 100 % population," Ray said. The two day conference commenced in the city on Thursday and will aim at showcasing the best practices from global infrastructures success stories and discuss on implementation of similar strategies in India. R.V Pandit, CMD, IPFonline Ltd, Hemant Kanoria, CMD, SREI Infrastructure Finance Ltd, were also present at the event. |

I'm dreaming of a day when I can travel from any part of the city to other by rail only...be it metro, suburban or circular.I don't know when this dream will come true but keeping in mind the crunch in roadspace...we cannot think of an alternative option other than the rail network !!!

Transport secy bats for cycling, walking
TIMES NEWS NETWORK Kolkata: State transport secretary RPS Kahlon is keen on introducing cycles on city’s outskirts and promoting walking. Speaking at the ‘Sustainable city conference 2011’ organised jointly by Indian Chamber of Commerce and Bengal chapter of Confederation of Real Estate Developers Association of India on Friday, Kahlon said he would strive to make the city more friendly for cyclists and pedestrians by promoting projects that encourage non-motorable transport systems. “It is not just mobility that concerns me but accessibility as well. It is becoming increasingly important to make transport systems accessible to people and goods. Sustainable city has to be for everyone — men, women, children, elderly, poor and disabled people. I am working on a plan to introduce the concept of cycling to the nearest metro station in Salt Lake and New Town when the service is introduced there,” Kahlon said. He has already had a round of talks with Rakhi Basu of World Bank for funding the pilot project. According to the preliminary proposal, there will be various cycle-on-hire centres across the townships. People can walk in, hire a bicycle and ride away. The bicycle can be deposited at the destination, be it a metro station or a stand near the person’s residence. The government, a private company and the World Bank will partner the project. Kahlon further said that he wished to revive the Sealdah-BBD Bag walkalator project that late minister Subhas Chakraborty had proposed nearly two decades ago. “Thousands walk down to BBD Bag from Sealdah. They have to dodge all kinds of hurdles including muck and slush near Koley market and traffic thereafter. The footpaths are not adequate. Hence, a dedicated elevated walkway makes sense,” he reasoned. He said work on an outer ring road with connections to various entry points to Kolkata was the need of the hour. “We have to find attractive routes of funding. The projects have to be bankable and, hence, viable,” he said. Kahlon said there was a need for integrated planning with proper relation between land use and transport. “Generally, land is priority. We first develop the land and then think of transport. This inevitably leads to digging and chaos that inconvenience people. In Rajarhat, too, we are heading the same way with just one broad corridor cutting through the township. It is time to think and work differently so that life of people can become a little more enjoyable outside their homes,” he remarked. |

Guess wat just came across an article regarding transportation.....and it says that even if in Kolkata the state of public transport is not very swanky or maintained,.....it has got the highest percentage of people using it ....more than 50 percent even as the city ranks 3rd in GDP in the country.....which clearly indicates the the trend and the habit of the citizens to avail public transport....and this why the city has got most number of different transport option than any Indian city.....all it needs is a smart management ang integration...........

Telegraph
Kulpi hope for Bengal Shipyard Calcutta, Feb. 16: Bengal Shipyard may set up its Rs 2,000-crore unit at Kulpi, next to the proposed port of DP World and Keventer Group. The shipyard was earlier slated to come up at Geonkhali, east Midnapore, but the project did not make any headway in the aftermath of the Nandigram violence. The company may officially announce the new location in July and start work by the end of 2011. The timing is crucial as a new government would be sworn in by then after the Assembly elections, raising hopes of a stable political climate. Bengal Shipyard is a 50:50 joint venture between city-based Apeejay Surrendra Group and Bharati Shipyard of Mumbai. It required about 500 acres for the project. In 2008, the company had chosen Geonkhali for the shipbuilding unit, and the state government had started the process of land acquisition. It was abandoned midway after protests by the local people following the Singur and Nandigram agitations. The company, however, did not scrap the project and decided to look for an alternative location. “We are trying our best. I spent my childhood here. I studied in Calcutta and then IIT Kharagpur. I am keen on the project,” V. Kumar, managing director of Bharati Shipyard, said. Kumar was in Calcutta to hand over two cargo ships to foreign buyers, which will ply in the Baltic sea. The ships were built at a small yard of Bharati near Shalimar in Howrah. Bharati, along with Apeejay, wants to build bigger vessels for bulk cargo and ferrying oil . Kumar did not mention any location nor any fixed timeline. “I think nothing will happen for sometime till the political climate settles down,” he said. Partho Barman Roy, director of Bharati Shipyard, was more forthcoming in setting a tentative time to break ground by the end of the year and start commercial production by early 2014. Neither disclosed any specific location. But sources said the new site would be on the left bank of Hooghly. Kulpi will have a 10-meter draught which is good for building large vessels. The region has been denotified from the command area of the Calcutta Port Trust for the Kulpi port project, which is stuck for 16 years in red tape. Port partners DP World and Keventer are still pursuing the project. Orissa project While Bengal Shipyard’s Bengal plan remains in a limbo because of the uncertain political climate, its Orissa project near Dhamra is also yet to take off. The Orissa government has already allotted 1,100 acres but has now requested the company to shift the project about a kilometre from the original location. Bengal Shipyard may now look to Andhra Pradesh for this project if the impasse in Orissa continues. |

Traffic website to help commuters
KOLKATA: New to the city and don't know how to reach a certain location? No need to fret. The Kolkata Traffic Police has come up with a solution. Simply log onto the Kolkata Traffic Police website and ask for directions. Your best possible route will be displayed on the city map. The system is real time and allows the user to enter the time and date when he or she plans to travel. Traffic congestion and one-way restrictions are taken into account while displaying the route. Separate routes are furnished for those who drive and others who prefer to walk. Take a ride from Alipore Road to Kestopur on Saturday evening for example. Policemen suggest that the driver passes through the Hastings crossing and takes the Strand Road up to the Sovabazar launch ghat before moving towards Shyambazar. Further, drive to South Dum Dum, Jessore Road, city airport, before turning a sharp right to the VIP Road and cross Baguiati before entering Keshtopur. Cops believe that this 24.2-km stretch should take about 42 minutes. For the 17.4-km return journey later in the evening that would take 40 minutes, they suggest that people drive through Salt Lake to the E M Bypass and take the Park Circus connector, the AJC Bose Road flyover and turn left into Belvedere Road. Officers concerned say there is a good response to this recently-launched facility. Not only outsiders, even city residents have started using this. "Other cities have such facilities and we received several requests to introduce a similar system in Kolkata. At a later stage, we may have a portable system that people may carry while travelling. We expect more people to use this facility," an officer says. "Even for those who have spent years here, it is sometimes difficult to decide the best route. The city skyline is also changing almost everyday. This is where the detailed instructions come in handy," he adds. The system not only covers Kolkata but also the suburbs. People travelling to destinations in the city from districts like South 24-Parganas, North 24-Parganas, Hooghly and Howrah can also check it out. Another development can be the riverfront! one best way to develop Kolkata and the suburbs is to build two parallel roads across the Hooghly, one on the Kolkata side and the other on the Howrah side.. starting from Kolkata till Bandel.. not only that, multiple bridges need to be built across the Hooghly to connect both the roads at various points..

The Jessore road needs to be divided and converted into 8 lanes.. I also propose building an elevated road corridor along the Jessore Road so that Barasat to Airport is a drive of 15 mins..
