Cool Hidco to introduce 20 buses in New Town

KOLKATA: Twenty new surface transport corporation buses are going to be introduced in Rajarhat to improve the dismal transport system of New Town.
The state transport department has taken this decision after a request from the Housing Infrastructure Development Corporation (Hidco). The buses will ply from New Town to different places of Salt Lake.

Hidco managing director Saurabh Das said that more such buses will be introduced in New Town in phases. "In the first phase, these 20 new buses will ply between New Town and Salt Lake. We have discussed the issue with the state transport department and there are plans to extend the services across the city in phases," Das said.

There have been complaints from the residents of New Town for a long time that Hidco was not developing the transport system of the area. Residents mostly have to depend on their own vehicles to move along. There is still no bus service for New Town residents to reach VIP Road directly by the Rajarhat main arterial road. Also, there is only a very few bus routes from New Town that moves along the city.

The authorities were working to inaugurate the first permanent bus terminus in Action Area-I. According to plans, New Town will have at least five bus terminuses of international standards and several taxi stands for an effective road transport system.

Along side introducing more buses services, authorities were working on plans to install more electronic traffic signaling system, zebra crossings and installing railings on both sides of the road. "We would be discussing the matter with the police and traffic engineers to set up the system," an official said.

The state transport department is introducing new buses in the city under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme (JNNURM). Out of the 1200 buses that would be brought, so far only some hundred buses have been introduced. Many of these buses may ply on Rajarhat also.

Finally, more takers for swanky low-floor buses

Commuting in the city by bus is set to get better with more swank and spacious buses set to hit the roads. Owners of banned buses have overcome their reluctance to take these new buses.
A large section of private bus operators had so far avoided taking these expensive buses though 50% of the cost is being borne jointly by the Centre and the state under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).
Earlier this month, the government issued showcause notices to operators who are not plying buses despite having permits. Under the central motor vehicles rules, the permit for a particular mode of public transport can be suspended if an operator fails to ply the vehicle. The touch act seems to have worked. “A large number of bus operators are now queuing up for these new buses. Already, 170 buses have hit the roads on different routes and 40 more will do so on Friday,” said Public Vehicles Department secretary Ujjwal Sengupta.
Bus operators initially resisted accepting buses offered to them under the JNNURM scheme. Around 3,500 of them stopped plying their vehicles after these got scrapped under Calcutta High Court’s order banning pre-’93 buses. Bus operators even moved Supreme Court challenging the ban on the basis of the age of a bus. But the Supreme Court refused to overrule the Calcutta High Court, leading bus operators to soften their stance.
“We have started applying for JNNURM buses. Already, these buses are plying on routes like 24, 24, 28, 12, 30B, 44, 46 and 3D. They are far superior in quality. More and more operators have started accepting the government offer,” said Tapan Banerjee of the Joint Council of Bus Syndicates (JCBS), which had earlier vehemently opposed the transport department’s move to replace old buses with new ones.

so this is the third route of volvo venture

i think instead of increasing no. of volvo routes, they should increase its frequency in curent routes...
so that it can have permanent customers....

Not third but mi8 be 5th or 6th....cz they have 3 route for airport, and two for Esplanade....as far as I have heard...though not sure

But yes i do agree that if proper care is not taken of these buses it will have the same fate as in the case of Whiteliners, which made Kol the first city in India to have ac buses for city ride

Are these going to replace older taxis or will they complement them?
