Be ready to walk on 3.5 km long Sabarmati river front walk way

A 3.5 km long walk way of Sabarmati river front will be ready by December 2011, said Ahmedabad Mayor Asit Vora today speaking to media persons.

Shri Vora said that new walk way is almost ready, and the entire work in 3.5 km stretch will be completed in December.

These patches will be between Subhash bridge and Dadhichi bridge, frm Gandhi bridge to Nehru bridge on western bank, and from Ambedkar bridge to Vasba barrage on western bank.

Mayor Vora said the AMC plans to open these walk ways during Kankaria festival which is scheduled in last week of December.

He said there will be RCC benches, street lights and sufficient parking space for visitors of walk ways.

Overall a very good job but AMC is just shocking when it comes to maintaining something.

yeah, it does need tidying up, but I think still a small portion of work is left. After that it will look gorgeous.

What is the progress on the East River Road ?

They do have ramps as i have seen in some previous photos and I think they "might" install some LED lights along the stairs or do some landscaping but who knows.

If it was a question of 2 or 3 kms they could have done something fancy, but this is 23 kms long. They had to keep the design economical. As it is the project cost has multiplied many times.

And, a simple riverfront is way better than having no riverfront

Delhi has Yamuna, Kolkata has Hooghly, Mumbai has Mithi, Chennai has Cooum and Adyar. Yet Sabarmati will have the first riverfront in India

Not really true. Kolkata already has a river front. One section is nice. The other section which is older is not so nice. What is true and exciting is that the size of the Sabarmati project is large in scale.

Yes, it is really nice. Clean and well maintained. But I guess it cannot be classified under a full-fledged riverfront. It is sort of an amusement park along the river.

Food on water may soon be a reality at Sabarmati

Given the average Amdavadi's fondness for food and taste for ambience, the idea of a floating restaurant on Sabarmati should have been grabbed the instant it was floated. Unfortunately, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation's special purpose vehicle, the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Corporation Limited (SRFDCL), could not go ahead with the project for lack of acceptable proposals. However, if SRFDCL officials are to be believed, this scenario is soon set to change.
"Earlier, we used to receive proposals where either a single company wanted to open as many as six restaurants, or sought exclusive rights for restaurants on the river. This would have monopolised the business and so it was not possible to go ahead. Now, with fresh proposals on terms suitable to SRFDCL, it may not be long before Amdavadis can dine on the Sabarmati," said executive director of SRFDCL and deputy municipal commissioner Dilip Mahajan.
The water level in the river has ceased to be a concern, with restaurateurs considering the option of anchoring the restaurants on the banks of the river. Mahajan conceded that the companies that have approached AMC with proposals do not see fluctuating water levels in the river as a threat to business anymore. This can be seen from the fact that SRFDCL is receiving multiple offers to set up floating restaurants.
The latest to join the bandwagon is Dharmadev Infrastructure Limited, a local real estate player and well-known business group. SRFDCL chairman and municipal commissioner Guruprasad Mohapatra told DNA that they were also studying a proposal to start water sports as part of the project.
"The idea is to introduce water sports, including scooter, fancy boats etc., on the Sabarmati. We are studying a proposal from an agency and would want to start the entertainment facility as soon as possible," he said. If things work out as envisaged, this could happen around the much-awaited Kankaria Carnival in December as AMC also plans to inaugurate parts of walkways along the Sabarmati during the carnival.

They may mean december next year. Never trust AMC.

My wish was that they would have made it a bit easier for senior citizens to climb up / down the river banks. Sloping ramps would have made it easier for wheelchair bound Sen.Citz to be taken on the river front.

No, I don't think you are asking too much. Making sure that there are ramps for seniors, wheelchairs, strollers etc. is a low hanging fruit and must be provisioned for. No project can be called world class until it has that. Such ramps are everywhere in developed countries.

Well they do have ramps in certain areas but even then if you look at the stairs in the video above you will see that they are not very steep and they have regular breaks. Shouldnt be much of an issue for most people.

Rs 50 Crores on a heritage park seems a lot of money even though its looks impressive on paper & only on a small stretch.

I dont know how old that video is posted above however the basics need to be finished as well as maintainance & up keep.

HC refuses to stay slum demolition at riverfront

The slum dwellers from Sabarmati riverbanks did not get any relief from Gujarat high court on Tuesday so far as demolition drive was concerned. AMC has been demolishing hutments for last three days.

A division bench refused to stay civic body's on-going demolition drive on the riverbanks. At the same time, the court instructed AMC to speed up the process of allotment of alternate houses to the Sabarmati Riverfront Development Project Ltd affected families.

HC asked 1,112 families, who have already been allotted houses but have not shifted yet, to immediately move to the new houses. When senior counsel Girish Patel raised the issue of want of facilities at the newly-built colonies, HC directed AMC to provide basic amenities there by December 31.

In regards with 1,242 families, whose identification process is over, the court has directed them to furnish required identification proofs before AMC within two weeks.

The civic body was further ordered to complete the process and allot houses to these families within a month. Out of 1,433 families, which were identified by Buch committee as qualifying for rehabilitation, identification process of 682 families is already over.

HC has asked the authority to allot houses to them. In regards with remaining 751 families whose case is under consideration, the directions are to provide them with temporary shelters in open plots at Ganeshpura, Pipalaj and Girdharnagar areas.

Hopefully this will be the end of the delays now
