Your Favourite Niches of British Culture

An idea for a thread, what are those little things about Britain and its culture that you love? Something that makes you feel at home. We talk a lot about what we like from other cultures, but what about the things we have to offer?

Im gonna start with Canal Barges.

The unique narrowboats that run the length of the UK never fail to impress me with their own art style and little culture. I like the fact that in the middle of our second largest metropolis, theres this...

It's awesome Even in the big developments up in London, you can find narrowboats (Paddington Basin, City Road, soon the Olympic Park).

If Narrowboats dont take your fancy, try out the Peak District tradition of 'Well Dressing'. Every year each village harvests thousands of flower petals and decorates their well.

Originating in the 14th century, the practice has changed very little. A wooden frame is constructed and filled with clay, the design is then traced onto the clay which is then covered in flower petals, moss, cones, beans, anything natural.

What else is out there? Those little things that make us British.

Please nobody hijack this thread in support of the ultra left or ultra right wing.

I wouldn't say it's a favourite of mine, but I like how whenever you go more than a few miles out of town and look into the nearest field there are always a team of old people walking around as if they're training to climb Everest.

Me and some friends walked up our local hill/mountain with a flagpole and plonked it on the top, ran down, celebrated... and some local ramblers at the bottom said we didn't take walking up hills seriously.

Will someone tell them they don't need £100s of Millets/Blacks gear to go walking! I've climbed hills in my bare feet...

when the ground turns white, everybody either hides at home and complains or has a great time sledging:

for an hour or two, nothing in life matters except getting a good run down your nearest hill. There's a great sense of community that is rarely portrayed by the media, who instead focus on, "ice casualties in the billions" and "fuck there's no grit left". Luckily, this makes the people having a good time on the slopes feel that little bit more unique.

london-b are you a member of a women's institute?

If you're going to ditch your guy friends to hang around with women then at least make them drink when they're sat in a pub garden!
