true - it is the effect of anglicizing. but for the most part we have not yet lost our roots, even in urban places. we just have the inexplicable addiction to naming stuff after something which you cannot relate to.. anything foreign is fathomed as "stylish" .. whereas "locale" is old-fashioned. in fact - am glad am not the only one who finds this taste odd .. there are many young fellas who find locale fashionable, romantic even. and, yet are aware of modern/contemporary sense that prevails..

why is this such a big thing. i'd rather see names like this than ones where builders name after themselves or people they know. I'd stick to Sapphire, coral any day if Ayyasamy towers or Anandavalli block were other options available (of course everything else remaining same)

no it is not a big thing. the flip question is what I implied - why is it such a big thing to always name them foreign? it is a natural question esp. when the norm seems prejudiced. ayyasamy or anandavalli are the only likely alternative available, then it probably sucks. and am not talking about names picked from people they know. there are probably plethora of names to pick from our rich linguistic/cultural heritage.

English language is not considered foreign anymore by virtue of British rule for two centuries and as it is adapted by educated indians to get jobs and eke out a living. There are many tamil christians around Kudankulam with foreign names (as per ur definition) like Francis,Anthony, robert wilson, charles to name a few who are my good friends giving me company for the last two months.they are very much part of our linguistic and cultural heritage. Therefore i feel nothing wrong in naming residential blocks with attractive and well sounding english names.

**my last post in this topic**

you are referring to names given to christian/muslim folks in india, but thats not the point. those are natural derivatives in most cases.

again, am not saying there is anything wrong with english but it is foreign whether you admit or not. am only asking whats wrong with traditional indian names .. w.o reference to any particular sect or religion.

the english is de-facto standard in academia due to majority of research labs, books, intelligentsia in english, greek, latin so on. but why the drooling admiration of greek gods, roman angels, warriors, descriptive verbs, adjectives that they have to envelop our lives everywhere? bet, most folks need to rush to a meriam webster to find what they mean.

there is nothing un-attractive about stuff such as kurinji, noyyal, akash, samudhra are all attractive for starters.

sometime back a few enthusiasts asked why not prayers in thamizh, although there was a good explanation for that. however they achieved a milestone in their agenda, and that was a "first" in hindu religion.. never achieved before.
