ATLANTA - The New South

ATLANTA, GEORGIA

Quote:
Atlanta (pronounced /ətˈlæntə/ or /ætˈlæntə/) is the capital and most populous city in the U.S. state of Georgia.
As of 2008, Atlanta is the thirty-third largest city in the United States, with an estimated population of 537,958. Its metropolitan area, officially named the Atlanta-Sandy Springs-Marietta, GA MSA (commonly referred to as Metropolitan Atlanta) is the ninth largest metropolitan area in the country, inhabited by approximately 5.5 million people. Like most areas in the Sun Belt, the Atlanta region has seen explosive growth in the past decade, adding more than 1.13 million residents between 2000 and 2008. It is the fastest growing area of the United States behind the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex.
Considered a top business city and transportation hub, Atlanta is the world headquarters of The Coca-Cola Company, AT&T Mobility, and Delta Air Lines. Atlanta has the country's third largest concentration of Fortune 500 companies and more than 75 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies have a presence in the metro area. Hartsfield–Jackson Atlanta International Airport, which is located seven miles south of downtown Atlanta, is the world's busiest airport and the only major airport to serve the city.

DOWNTOWN
Quote:
Downtown Atlanta is the first and largest of the three financial districts in the city of Atlanta. Downtown Atlanta is the location of many corporate or regional headquarters, city, county, state and federal government facilities, sporting facilities, and is the central tourist attraction of the city. The largest financial district also contains striking architecture that dates back to the 1800s while maintaining a modern look and feel. Finally, the area is also the location of the hub of MARTA rail lines and where the major Interstates meet each other with two of them forming the Downtown Connector.
As defined by the Central Atlanta Progress (CAP) organization, the area measures approximately four square miles, and had 23,300 residents as of 2006. This area is bound by North Avenue to the north, Boulevard to the east, Interstate 20 to the south, and Northside Drive to the west. This definition of Downtown Atlanta includes central areas like Five Points, the Hotel District and Fairlie-Poplar and outlying inner-city neighborhoods such as SoNo, and Castleberry Hill.
Part of the Downtown Atlanta skyline from the Downtown Connector.
The Atlanta Downtown Improvement District (ADID) organization, though, defines a much smaller downtown area measuring just one and two tenths square miles. This area is roughly bound by North Avenue to the north, Piedmont Avenue and then Downtown Connector to the east, Martin Luther King Junior Drive, Courtland Street, and Edgewood Avenue to the south, and the railroad tracks to the west. This area only includes the core central business district neighborhoods of Fairlie-Poplar, Five Points, the Hotel District, Centennial Hills, and as of May 2007, the Railroad District.
The Downtown area is one of the most active business districts in the Atlanta Metropolitan Area. The daytime population swells to over 140,000 as of 2006. Downtown brings in more than 12 million visitors annually. Finally, Downtown boasts more than 12,000 hotel rooms, 185 restaurants/eateries and 30 bars/nightclubs.
Downtown Atlanta, like other central business districts in the U.S., is undergoing a transformation that includes building condos and lofts, uninhabited buildings being renovated and/or demolished, and the influx of people and businesses coming to the area.

LITTLE FIVE POINTS

Quote:
Little Five Points (also L5P or LFP or Little Five) is a district of Atlanta, Georgia, United States, 2½ miles (4 km) east of downtown. It was established in the early 1900s as the commercial district for the adjacent Inman Park and Candler Park neighborhoods to the west and east. It is home to many of the city's older retail stores, restaurants, bars, theater companies, and music venues.
By the 1970s, Little Five Points had fallen into disrepair. A revitalization began as urban pioneers moved into the then-cheap neighborhood and restored the Victorian-style homes. By 1981, local merchants formed the Little Five Points Partnership to continue the restoration and expansion of the retail area, turning what was formerly a gas station into the "484 retail area" — several retail shops aligned in strip-mall style.

Despite the Olympics, despite CNN and despite its airport, Atlanta still remains very unknown outside the US. Show us more, please.

MIDTOWN

Quote:
Midtown Atlanta is the second largest financial district in the city of Atlanta, Georgia, situated between the commercial and financial districts of Downtown and SoNo to the south and the affluent residential and commercial district of Buckhead to the north. Midtown contains about one-third of the city's high-rises and some of Atlanta's most iconic buildings, such as the Bank of America Plaza, (situated between Midtown and Downtown), AT&T Midtown Center, Atlantic Center, 1180 Peachtree, and Promenade II. The district is the epicenter of the city's music and artistic scene that includes the Fox Theatre, Woodruff Arts Center, the High Museum of Art, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the 14th Street Playhouse.
As defined by the Midtown Alliance organization, the area measures approximately four square miles and has a resident population of 30,000. The area also has a workplace population of 68,000, along with 20,000 students and approximately 6 million visitors annually. The official boundaries of the district are the Beltline just east of Monroe Drive on the east, I-85 and I-75 to the north, Howell Mill Road on the west and Ralph McGill Boulevard on the south. This definition of Midtown Atlanta includes upscale neighborhoods such as Ansley Park and Atlantic Station, as well as the neighborhoods of Home Park and Sherwood Forest.
The Midtown district has been a primary area of growth in the city with new condominium units being built, new stores opening up, and businesses and people moving into the area.
Midtown Atlanta is also home to two well known institutions of higher education: Georgia Institute of Technology and the Atlanta division of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD.)

BUCKHEAD

Quote:
Buckhead is an upscale uptown district within the city of Atlanta, Georgia, United States and comprising approximately the northern one-fifth of the city. Buckhead could be characterized as mostly suburban in character, with a highly urbanized center with many high-rises centered along Peachtree Rd and GA-400. Buckhead comprises most of the Atlanta North-end neighborhoods between Interstate 85 and Interstate 75 along with several large neighborhoods to the West of I-75. It is bordered by: Cumberland and Vinings of Cobb County to the Northwest, Sandy Springs in Fulton County to the North, North Atlanta and North Druid Hills in Dekalb County to the East, midtown to the South, and finally flanked to the Southwest by Cross Creek, which together with Underwood Hills, defines the Southwest border with Bolton, Ridgewood Heights, Hills Park, Berkeley Park and a few other well-known neighborhoods that are sometimes questionably referred to by realtors as "Midtown West".
Buckhead is sometimes promoted as the "Beverly Hills of the South" in reference to Beverly Hills, California, an area to which it is often compared.

PIEDMONT PARK

Quote:
Piedmont Park is a 189-acre (0.76 km2) urban park in Atlanta, Georgia, located in Midtown, north of the city center. Originally the land was owned by Dr. Benjamin Walker, who used it as his out-of-town gentleman's farm and residence. He sold the land in 1887 to the Gentlemen's Driving Club (later renamed the Piedmont Driving Club), who wanted to establish an exclusive club and racing ground for horse enthusiasts. The Driving Club entered an agreement with the Piedmont Exposition Company, headed by prominent Atlantan Charles A. Collier, to use the land for fairs and expositions and later gave the park its name.
The park was originally designed by Joseph Forsyth Johnson to host the first of two major expositions held in the park in the late 19th century. The Piedmont Exposition opened in October 1887 to great fanfare. The event was a success and set the stage for the World's Fair which was held in the park seven years later in 1895. Both exhibitions showcased the prosperity of the region that had occurred during and after the Reconstruction period. In the early 20th century, a redesign plan called the Olmsted plan, was begun by the sons of New York Central Park architect, Frederick Law Olmsted. The effort led to the addition of scenic paths in the park and the joining of the park with the Ansley park system.
Over the years, the park has also served as an athletic center for the city. Atlanta's first professional baseball team, the Atlanta Crackers, played in the park from 1902 to 1904. Several important intercollegiate rivalries were also forged in the park including the University of Georgia vs. Georgia Tech baseball rivalry and Georgia versus Auburn football which has been called the "Deep South's Oldest Rivalry".
Throughout the 20th century, many other improvements have been made in the park including the addition of covered picnic areas, tennis facilities, the Lake Clara Meer dock and visitors center, and two playgrounds. Today, the park is a popular place for gathering, grilling, swimming, fishing, playing and more. In 2008, a ground-breaking ceremony was held for a 53-acre (210,000 m2) extension to the park and complete renovation of the bathhouse and swimming pool. The renovated pool opened in summer of 2009, while the expansion will take much longer.

Yeah, sometimes it can get that cold, although snow is kinda rare in Atlanta. Usually get freezing rain or sleet during the winter, most of the time it doesn't stick.
