Is #8 on campus? I don't remember seeing it during my stay in Austin last year.

I love Austin. But, I miss the Austin I once knew...the HIP Austin. It's gone forever. Now Austin is like the rest of the big cities. It's identity has been absorbed by rampant, uncontrolled growth and it has been infiltrated by "uncool" outsiders. It's sad. I pray to God what has happened to Austin will not happen to New Orleans. We're the last truly hip city left. But, we are protecting it fiercly. So many think it is totally cool if their city explodes with growth. While believing in growth in New Orleans, those of us here refuse to let the typical American growth occur here. We will chase you away. We grow at our own pace, but, don't bring your inconsiderate money hungry shit here. We won't have it. Still love Austin, but, sad to see it grow so fast. The hip Austin I once knew is really gone. And that makes me sad. I'll still come back. But, what I once viewed as the only other really cool city around these parts outside of New Orleans is gone...now the really truly only hip one left is New Orleans. Look at all of those mirrored tall buildings. That is a disgrace. The money won in Austin. It won't here...at least until I have my last breath.

Awesome pics. I think Austin is a unique enough place and the city has its own spirit that isn't going to be lost. It will absorb the new development and it will have a lived-in feel, then it will be back to being same ol Austin..just with some nice development.

You typically don't see the street scenes of south Austin. I really appreciated that. I can't say I've ever been south of Barton Springs honestly..

to LSyd, great thread, and, the funk will never be eaten!
to SeanofNewOrleans, there are very few who agree with your views of austin. the fact that austin is growing shouldn't be viewed as a negative; it means that people want to be a part of what makes this city a wonderful place to live. i don't understand why people associate new towers & smart, urban development as detrimental to a city's unique, hip vibe. the vibe is here, always has been, always will be. and, it keeps getting better.

great photos, once again!

Don't think that I don't like Austin....I do. But, sorry, the vibe is gone....or what is left is very weak. And I'm not alone in thinking this....I have very good friends here in New Orleans who used to live in Austin. And they totally think just as I do...they now rent out their home in Austin and have lived here for 6 years. They think as I do....the more time passes, the more Austin losses its vibe and turns into regular metropolitan America....sorry. It's just true. I still visit, but, it's just not that cool anymore.

I found Austin to be completely underwhelming.

These photos look nice but I never got the whole "hip" Austin thing. The hipness seemed very store-bought and self aggrandizing to me. Granted I didn't spend alot of time there (two days) and didn't have a very good tour guide (even though he is a native) so I may have missed something but it didn't have a feel that I found too interesting or appealing. It could be that my expectations were just too high. I really expected to fall hard for the city but found it depressing and bland. The bats were awesome!!! I had good food!! That lake is pretty! The hills are lovely. But it didn't seem walkable and at the time downtown was D-E-A-D. But I was there at a bad time for the city. I was there at the height of the tech bubble bursting.

I kind of get what the NO guys is talking about. Places that create are more interesting then those that import. If Austin sees too much growth too fast the hipsters (creators) will become too outnumbered by the scenesters (those that show up to enjoy what the hipsters have created). I’m not sure that a few new towers equate to a watering down of the local vibe but places do change pretty quickly.

Amazing set. I'm excited to see all the new residential downtown fill up and the domino effect it will have.

thanks y'all.

Sean, it's still there, it's just harder to find and even dispersed because of a glut of hipsters with store bought coolness, as described below.

dude the hipster town is portland now.

but seriously, austin will always be hip for texas and if you think its not then you have not been there lately. i have made many tripos to austin over the last decade and it really hasnt changed much. there still good food, crazy college kids and sixth street is still packed weekly.

plus you can always go out to the river and chill out which i always make a point to do.

There's nothing hip about drugs, gays, and illiterates. That's what new orleans and austin are, so austin is improving for the better

Its a damn shame that people in this country are allowed to live different lifestyles than the ones you approve of. Whats funny is that Austin, even with all the drugs, gays, and illiterates, is one of the most prosperous cities in the state. Im sure they will be just fine without you.

Where the hell did that come from? Pulling up an old ass thread to bash on whole demographics? Was this a drunk post? Sure seems like it.

I wonder if this was why google decided to put an office in Austin?

What a great thread! Thank you to the asshole that bumped it! :p

I really loved #2 and #4 right at the start of the thread. What amazing photos, and I knew right off it would be a awesome thread.

It is really fun to look at older picture threads like this. I hope another ass comes along in another couple years to give it another bump. lol
