Scary Places: Abandoned Asylums And Hospitals

Scary Places: Abandoned Asylums And Hospitals

For over a hundred years, the mentally ill were housed together in alms houses and converted jails, then later in the 19th century, huge sprawling self-contained asylums with their own farms and small industies, and then finally, in overcrowded psychiatric hospitals where patients were abused and subjected to cruel "treatments" before the dawn of psychopharmacology allowed them to be medicated and released to live among us once more. The old Kirkbride asylums and cottages are now abandoned and the newer hospitals stand like ghosts amid encroaching suburbs and redevelopment schemes. Many of these 19th and 20th Century wonders are already gone forever, cleared for golf courses, luxury condos and Poltergeist housing developments. But their memory lives on thanks to intrepid souls (still living) that sneak in for a good peek. Wards, dingy basements, stairwells, crumbling walls, and don't forget the morgue!

~I'll start off with a tour of Norwich State Hospital:

Now largely demolished for redevelopment, this asylum in Massachusetts was quite notorious in its day.

Philadelphia State Hospital "Byberry"

One of the most notorious asylums in the US, Byberry is now completely gone, replaced by a housing development. On its many acres was a hospital that became infamous for overcrowding and abuse.

Danvers State Hospital

One of the finest examples of 19th Century Kirkbride architecture in the US. Danvers, in Massachusetts, has been redeveloped for condos but much of the original site has been lost.

The Ladd School - Exeter Rhode Island

A school for developmentally disabled children, this facility was closed down and abondoned for years. It was said to be haunted. It has now been largely demolished.

Buffalo State Hospital

One of the most architecturally significant hospital structures of any kind in the US. Designed by Romanesque Revivalist Henry Hobson Richardson, this facility served in the heart of Buffalo NY for about 100 years before it was gradually closed. It awaits redevelopment.

Usually I'd consider abandoned places in photos too be eerie, but this is actually really scary.

Northampton State Hospital

One of the first Kirkbride asylums in America, Northampton opened its doors as the Northampton Lunatic Asylum in 1854. Over the years, the facility expanded as a result of chronic overcrowding until it was finally emptied out from the 1960s until it was closed. Much of the site has been demolished for redevelopment.

Padova City in Kamloops British Columbia.
Was a town west of the city where Tuberculosis patients were Quarantined. Before that it was an insane asylum. This place has always reminded me of the hills have eyes, due to the fact that the hills are desert behind and its a town, with schools, hospitals, houses, apartments, churches etc. I have done it at night a few times, scared the SHIT out of me. There are also underground tunnels that connect every building in the town. I dont know what they were used for, but friends of mine have gone in them and said that they lasted about 15 seconds before the stench and just plain fear got to them.

Eerie. An entire tubercular colony abandoned. It's very common to have tunnels that connect every building. In most US asylums, even the massive ones like Pilgrim State Hospital and Byberry, underground tunnels connected the buildings. Often they were laced with asbestos coated pipes that are tough to remediate. People interested in exploring these places need to wear masks. The abbatoir is interesting. Did they mostly slaughter pigs or cows there? A lot of early Kirkbride Plan http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kirkbride_Plan asylums were designed as self-sustaining communities with their own farms and dairys. Hence the term "funny farm". Inmates (or patients) were assigned those tasks in hopes that they could function outside when released. When the facilities became overcrowded after WW1, the farms were left to rot and the hospitals became dehumanizing warehouses.

In Michigan this hospital was one of the early Kirkbride asylums in the state and has been partially restored and reused.

Interesting! And i`m not too sure, I`m sure it was mostly pigs...judging by the size of the corrals (no picture, but I have seen it in person)
