Pennhurst

One of the worst, most notorious facilities in the US as revealed in a famous 1968 investigative report. Pennhurst was a state school for developmentally disabled children outside of Philadelphia. The abuse and overcrowding became rampant and the school was eventually shut down. The campus sits eerily untouched as it awaits its fate.

Pilgrim State Hospital -The Beast

Built in the 1920's to end overcrowding among New York State's numerous mental institutions, Pilgrim State Hospital itself became overcrowded. At one time housing over 16,000 patients, it was the largest mental hospital in the world. Decades later, it still houses patients, albeit far fewer and many of the buildings on its campus have been demolished while others await possible redevelopment.

Foxboro State Hospital

This asylum began its life as a "Home For Dypsomaniacs and Inebriates" in Massachusetts. It later housed psychiatric patients until it finally closed in the 1970s. It has been fully renovated as a residential development.

Gaebler Children's Center

Located on the grounds of Metropolitan State Hospital in massachusetts, The Gaebler Hospital was established to house and treat severely developmentally disabled children. It became known for overcrowding and neglect and was finally closed in 1991.

The Belchertown State School

Located in Belchertown Massachusetts, this school was a horror movie of abuse and neglect. Severely retarded children were often left to die by uncaring staff. The notoriety finally caught up with it and the facility was shut down in the 1970s.

King's Park Psychiatric Center

One of the major psychiatric hospitals built to ease congestion in New York States mental health system, King's Park began as King's Park Lunatic Asylum in 1885. Its vast property included farms and quarters for tubercular patients as well as war veterans. After WWI, the hospital began an earnest expansion that took its patient count to over 9,000 before new treatments and cost cutting led to its eventual emptying out and closure in 1996. The site rests as a huge but expensive plum for a developer willing to pay for asbestos removal.

I've never seen a lot of those pics. Excellent, thanks.

Pretty much forgotten. This hospital was adjacent to the Pilgrim complex on the southwest corner. Edgewood State Hospital (Deer Park), built in the '40s and closed in 1971. Mercilessly set upon by vandals for the next two decades, it was finally demolished in 1989 because it became too dangerous. Most of the top burned, and there were open elevator shafts by then.

Edgewood was built for war veterans mainly but after Community Mental Health became law in 1963, these hospitals began discharging patients and consolidating the remaining ones in fewer places. Pilgim got most of them but even their huge campus was largely abandoned. The estimated cost for abating asbestos at King's Park is over $80 million so anyone paying that kind of money would have to build a lot at that site to recoup and apparently ( you would know better than me ) the area residents don't want anything big there. It's a stalemate.

From what I'm reading, Edgewood became Pilgrim's tuberculosis ward, essentially.

I found Kings Park in 2003 when I accidently drove off Route 25A. It spurred me to start an asylum thread on SSP actually, and I drove out to the Pilgrim site with all of its Dresden-like grounds (still an exit on the Sagtikos Parkway). The main tower that's still in use looked a lot more forbidding before the renovation. Easily seen from the expressway, it was a definite childhood memory driving past this place with its creepy looking structures, incinerator.

The area is planned as a mini-city (Heartland Town Center). High density with several 20-story residential buildings, sports, retail complex. Approved, but the process involving environmental impact studies is always extremely slow on LI. Not to mention still mountains of brick and debris on the site with many other abandoned buildings.

Interesting. I first noticed these immense asylums when I drove past Byberry in Northern philadelphia 20 years ago. It was so huge and strange with overgrown trees I wondered what it was all about. It's spooky to think that at that time it was still open and functioning, probably filled with elderly patients. Apparently parts of Pilgrim are still in use but I think Creedmoor is the only remaining big facility. I'm looking for good shots of Central Islip.

Worcester State Hospital

located on a bluff above Worceter Massachusetts, this grand old Kirkbride asylum was built at the site of Massachusetts's first asylum the Worcester Lunatic asylum which opened in 1833. The newer Kirkbride began in 1870 and served until its closure in 1991 when an enormous fire engulfed much of the structure. A mid-20th century building continued operation. Much of the original kirkbride has been demolished and the clocktower portion is being redeveloped.

Oregon State Hospital

Known as the location where One Flew Over The Cukoos Nest was filmed, the Oregon State Lunatic Asylum is the oldest asylum in the Western US. Now renamed, the hospital peaked in the late 1950s and has slowly declined but portions of it still house patients. Allegations of abuse and atrocious conditions persist to this day. Urns containing the ashes of unclaimed patients still remain there to this day.

Great thread!!!

When I lived in Oregon and I have been told that Oregon State Hospital was the largest mental institute in the world (I don't know if that is true). Many times my friends and I drove pass by that hospital, it was so creepy! Last time I heard some wings of Oregon State Hospital got demolished to make way for new buildings.

Thanks!

Oregon State Hospital was quite large and at its peak in the late 1950s, it had over 3,500 patients in 70 buildings. The largest hospital in the world was Pilgrim state Hospital on Long island with over 20,000 patients at its height.
