EL PASO Texas *Gallery*

El Paso

I wanted to start a thread of pictures focusing on one of the great cities of the west, El Paso Texas. Along with its twin city across the border Ciudad Juarez, El Paso has been a gathering place for people for centuries. Its history is intertwined with the history of Texas, of New Mexico, and Mexico. Today the city is approaching 700,000 while Juarez has over 1.3 million for a combined 2 million + people. So here it is, El Paso:

Nice photos!!

Although I never been there myself judging from those photos, I really think El Paso is one of the most underated cities in Texas.

By the way is there anyway you can take some photos of Juarez? I will personally chip in money for the bulletproof vest.

Thanx! There is a really good forum for CD Juarez in the Mexico Forum. But I have a sneaking suspicion those guys might come over and post some of their shots here!

El Paso In The 1940s and '50s

El Paso is not glitzy or flashy. To understand El Paso, you have to dig through all the layers of history and time. It was a military outpost and then a mining center and railway hub. After World War 2, the city diversified into clothing and textiles, defense, and energy. It is a working class, gritty environment that is now predominantly latino. The Zoot suit began in El Paso. The Pachuco began there. In the 1940s and '50s people travelling by rail had only one large stop between San Antonio or Dallas, and Los Angeles: El Paso. Nearby Juarez supplied the area with its own charms and customs. Together, they were unique.

I barely remember them from before they were permanently retired. Occasionally a proposal comes up to revive them and the city is developing a mass transit masterplan but if the streetcars return, they'll be the new ones.

They still have a few of them in storage. A lot of people are hoping that maybe one run can have them. Who knows?

Nice pics of El Paso. Any plans for a new tallest for the city?

Aside from the crazy 3,000ft solar tower proposal several years ago, there are no plans at the moment for a new tallest building. El Paso's big banks got aquired years ago and its marquee employer, El Paso Natural Gas moved their head offices to Houston 25 years ago. One significant company, Western Refining has added a 12 story wing to their offices in the historic Mills Building on the San Jacinto Plaza downtown and that is the first office tall in El Paso since 1980. Plans for a major convention hotel tower downtown have been slow to develop and aside from the new Federal Courthouse, most of the newer development is low-rise on the city's periphery.

The Camino Real Paso Del Norte Hotel

Designed by noted El Paso architect Henry Trost and opened in 1912, the Hotel Paso Del Norte has witnessed many historic visitors and events. During the Mexican Revolution in 1915-16, spectators took to the roof to watch fighting between Pancho Villa and his forces, and the Mexican Army.

El Paso Union Station

Designed by Daniel Burnham, architect of Washington DC's Union Station and opened in 1906, El Paso's Union Station now serves Amtrak's Sunset Limited route.

Postcards From Ciudad Juarez, 1950s-1960s

El Paso's twin city Ciudad Juarez has always had a feel and a vibe all its own, in the 1960's it was part dusty bordertown with all the bars and nightclubs you'd expect, part Mexico Tropical, with the colorful street vendors, foliage, and foods of Mexico, and part rail hub for northern Chihuahua. While El Paso had the refineries, military base, banks and the money, Juarez had all the fun. Today, Juarez is enmeshed in the global economy as a major manufacturing hub with Maquiladora factories and a growing list of companies. The world's largest semiconductor plant is now open nearby. It expects to employ as many as 20,000 workers.
