It's sad. The wonderful old buildings downtown lost so many retailers and businesses when the economy started to worsen at the border in 1982. The El Paso economy is starting to roar back again after big losses in industrial jobs as well as downtown retail due to the $5 billion injection of 25,000 troops at Ft. Bliss, but like so many cities, the new investment is in the outer fringes. Downtown revitalization was the biggest item on the city's agenda before the financial crisis of 2008. Now, some things will have to wait but the good news is that after decades of ignoring or reviling Downtown, El Pasoans have finally rediscovered their heritage and hopefully the changes that come will transform not just the core, but some of those low-lying neighborhoods around it.

Splendid, 1st time I've seen an El Paso thread here on SSC, thumbs-up for making a respective gallery of the city too. I can see the city has a few gems around.

It's a unique place and if only neighboring Juarez wasn't a warzone you could visit and have the whole experience!

I love the Southwest so much, that is why I moved to AZ 4 years ago.

ASARCO

ASARCO was a massive smelter that dominated El Paso's skyline for nearly 100 years. Due to environmental hazards, it was closed forever and awaits demolition and redevelopment.

Chamizal Park

In 1966, a longstanding border dispute between the US and Mexico was finally resolved as the Rio Grande River was channelized through El Paso and the boundary was fixed. The result was the creation of a bi-national park on both sides with greenery and ammenities. Chamizal Park is truly an oasis in a parched land.
