I'll try post more detail later on the new terminal at Alicante, along with pictures. Its a fantastic development and I think allot of people will be pleasantly surprised by what Alicante is building.

This is a pretty huge facility for 9 million passengers. What was the cost?

Around the 300 million mark I think. When you look at the terminals that are already there, you can tell it really isnt enough for 9 million a year. But yeh, it is huge, definetly built with more passengers in mind.

Supposedly, Terminal 2 will be dismantled, Terminal 1 will be Terminal 2 and the new Terminal will be Terminal 1. The new airport will have a capacity for 20 million passenger per year, even 25 if necessary, so many years have to pass in order to see the necessity to build a new terminal.

There have been talks to build a new runway at the north, between the terminals and the actual railway. However, there is no real necessity for a new one until now, may be if the numbers of passengers increase to about 15 million/year; the crisis does the rest, so we will have to wait to see a new one.

There are many new infrastructures which are been built/planned for the next ten years or so in Alicante or the province. These are:

1) The extension of the tram to the new intermodal station at the center of the city. The tram actually goes from Alicante to Benidorm/Denia (60km to the north).
2) The new AVE will go through the new terminal. The new terminal is prepared to accept the tram and the high speed train.
3) At the end of 2012, the AVE (up to 350km/h) to Madrid will open, so that Madrid will be at 1.5/1.75h from Alicante (now is about 3.75h). At the end of 2010 Madrid will be at 3h since the normal train will change the gauge near Albacete and use the new HSR line from Valencia to Madrid.
4) A new HSR (up to 250km/h) is been planned from Alicante to Valencia along the coast (going through Benidorm, Denia).
5) The new central motorway to Valencia will open at the end of this year.

All these new infrastructures mean more passengers per year at the airport since much more people will use its infrastructures (mainly foreign residents at the north and the south of the province). But it will depend on the actual crisis. We will have to wait and see ....

I think terminal 2 was always just going to be a temporary terminal, until the new one is finished, so that will definetly go. But there are rumours on the spanish alicante airport thread that terminal 1 will actually go too, leaving just the new one. I hope its not true
