You must have overlooked Zen's very-recent answer to the second question: "Yes, conduits for electrical, pipes, ducts all kinds of stuff. Same with the concrete box beams."

The box girder is on temporary supports, as that area will eventually be open space (except for the four permanent support columns). This PDF really helps explain it:

http://www.panynj.gov/wtcprogress/pd...ort_oct_08.pdf (Found at: PANYNJ WTC Progress Site)

I just wish the graphics weren't so darn pixelated, like these, making some of the text hard to decipher:

These show that they originally planned to use a truss system that would have eliminated the need for the support columns, but that would have slowed the progress of the memorial area above and would have required even more temporary supports.

From Curbed.com, the East-West connection from WFC to WTC flooded a couple days ago. Some pics,

Fortunately the underpass under West Street has not reached the WTC side, so no flooding over there.

WOW! That is a most excellent set of pictures. They really show how massive those girders are. I like how they tested that the pieces of the box girder would fit together.

OK,

So this 'minor' issue is still unresolved. It's been a while and the East West Corridor is still a smelly pool (and quite a deep one!).

I'm wondering if this is actually quite a big deal?

I'm surprised the water hasn't been pumped out yet as well. It'll be a big deal if it's still there around Christmas. Getting a couple weeks behind schedule is fixable, a couple months not so much.

I'm suprised the problem hasn't been fixed yet as well. It sounded like a simple matter of injecting more grout to plug the hole. Yet, it's still a swimming hole.

From the earthcam it looks like they started pumping the water out of the "west pool". No more water visible from the earthcam's view.

edit: and two more big arches on site as well as some smaller ones!!
