Cool map. And this reminds me to ask something here, just to try. At university I'm doing a project in Times Square (Toysrus plot, 44-45th street), anyone knows where to find maps or anything to have a better idea of what's under Times Square? I've searched in google for a long time trying a lot of different words, and didn't find anything, I just have some slight idea of what's there and I was going to invent it, it's not so important so if it's very hard to find it, it's easier just to invent it, that's what I'm doing.

Reminds me of one of those Science Fiction movies where they discover an enormous alien skeleton......... This is New York...could be true ?

Went through the site yesterday and used the newly opened access to get above ground through Brookfield Place. This new area is very, very nice. If the rest of the station looks like this, it is going to be amazing to experience. The materials and quality of construction are top notch. The amount of marble is stunning, and the whale ribs on the ceiling are interesting. One thing that really stands out is how quiet the corridor is! You'd think that with all of those hard surfaces sound would echo and amplify like crazy, but a kid screamed and it didn't echo at all.

Acoustic engineers are in charge to resolve these types of issues, among other challenges.

They're doing a great job! I noticed the columns and ceiling supports/design are covered with a popcorn style paint, rather than being painted flat. I'm sure that helps to diffuse the sound. They probably added some foam to the ceiling as well, for sound absorption. It really, really makes a difference with the atmosphere. You don't get the feeling that you're in some monstrous old building like a grand old city hall with all of that marble. If it echoed, it would feel like some government agency building portrayed in the movies.

I suspect that as the retail spaces open up the sound levels will stay relatively the same ... the higher traffic and sound producing elements being cancelled out by the larger open volumes. Any ambient noise increases should be minimal.

This is really going to be something special -- as is just about everything Santiago Calatrava designs. Unfortunately, his projects tend to be way over budget and deadline, but much of that is because his vision is so leading edge that new engineering techniques have to be developed along the way. In the end it will be worth it.
