Is it known if this structure will be illuminated by "up lights" mounted in the sidewalk below? That would seem the only logical way to evenly illiminate each of the portals and rafters.

It looks like the inside of Death Star II.

Narrow spans are probably just an engineering trick to reduce the weight on longer and longer spans, while their 'base' may not be wide enough to support 'normal' thickness spans at that point. The 'base' increases in size at the edges when the length is most extreme.

Seems for these really long rafters they need two lifting points at each end to keep things stable.

Seeing as this each and every piece of this massive steel structure is being welded together, effectively making it one single piece of steel, it would appear that there is no provision for expansion and contraction. If it just sat loose on the "floor" it could move freely as it expands and contracts but it is bolted to each of the lower and sub portals which cannot move without causing damage to the below grade structures. Any clarification on this? (eg: All large steel frame structures such as the memorial plaza and Path hall have many expansion points.)

Two questions please:
What is the width of the skylight?
What is the approximate weight of these huge rafters?

#56 North being lifted. One left! I believe 2 or 3 left on the South side. Hopefully this will all be done this week!

I love to see the American Flag displayed, but...

didn't they jump the gun a bit by displaying it on north rafter #56? I guess I would have waited until #57 was raised.

2nd question: When is the rest of #57 scheduled to arrive on site?

My guess is that the last rafter will go in in multiple segments, i.e. will not be welded on the ground before lift. So they decided to celebrate this rafter since it could be the longest one lifted in a single piece.
