Otie's renderings are far better than that, this was originally from the PANYNJ 2025 report.

I think that this is a masterpiece by Santiago Calatrava but does anyone else feel like it's not-special? I mean, Calatrava has designed dozens of structures like this. It's really pretty and nice to have one of these clones in New York, but I feel like maybe it should be a little different than his other designs. That said, this is a wonderful building which I would love to pay a visit to someday.

It was a joke, we are in 2014. And I agree, I could've done it better.

boxes

sorry if this has already been determined, but did we ever figure out what the function of the boxes between the rafters is?

Our collective best guess has something to do with lighting, but no we haven't. Somebody correct me if I'm mistaken.

Hmmm seems like there's a lot of work left to do on Platform B. Doesn't seem likely it will open until at least February, then again you'd be surprised how much could be done by January.

Otie confirmed that they were temporary and will be removed.

If I recall correctly, he then said he was mistaken and that he and his contact got their wires crossed.

The boxes are certainly not temporary. We just don't know what exactly they are for.

Yes, this is correct. Since I am not directly involved in business down there, I risk myself to play Chinese whispers.

My best bet is that those are lighting fixtures, but how would they cross the wire if the connections between a rafter and a transition are two flat plates welded with each other?

Who else would like to speculate?

Oooooh! Me! Speculation is fun.

Hmmmm....

I think they are private tanning booths that will have a stellar view of the road below. It'll be a tanning experience. You'll be hoisted straight up into the box, tanning lights will come one, and when you're done - rappel back to the sidewalk.

Perfectly logical.

(I kinda think lighting fixtures makes sense. but not for tanning)

Hi Otie,

Now that the rafters have been installed. What other major construction is left before this Transit Hub opens?

Rafters/transitions/upper portals/abutment outer shells are still under heavy welding, give it a couple of weeks and the entire Oculus Skanska steel will be done. Then, Enclos will move with installation of glass envelope panels at portal pockets and begin installing machinery and supports for skylight with aid of a hammerhead crane on north outside of Oculus.

Platforms B, C & D are the last major components of the hub. Still, there's a plethora of work remaining.

This wasn't visible in the scaled-down pic I posted a while back
