Does anyone else think this project is too strange and expensive?

Not really that strange a project. But expensive? Very. I'm optimistic it will turn out nice enough physically, but I think ultimately the transit hub will endure as a symbol of red tape and mismanagement. Also why hiring Calatrava for anything big is a risky choice at best.

Mismanaged and expensive, absolutely.
But I really believe this will be spectacular & iconic when finished (IMHO it already is) and it will be one of NYC crown's jewels (along with the statue of Liberty, ESB, Chrysler Building, etc.)
And unlike the others you'll be able to visit for free...

The high cost and cost overruns shouldn't be blamed on Calatrava, at least not most of it.

The budget includes mechanicals for the rest of the complex. Also, much of the expense was a result of attempting to build around active rail lines. Remember the excavation around active lines, leaving them suspended on scaffolding? Meanwhile, due to pressure to get the memorial done, the roof/ground-deck was built first, making construction below far more difficult.

Calatrava's designs are indeed expensive. But that is just a part of why this "transportation hub" cost so many billions of dollars. The iconic above ground portion likely accounts for a small fraction of budget. Does anyone know the percentage?

Haha, c'mon guys. Earthcam is not doing this for us. They're hired by a client and do whatever the client asks them to do. So if you want to be mad at anybody for the update slowdown, it's probably the PA that calls the shots.

Being that this is probably one of Earthcam's most popular cams, you'd think they would take better care of it. It doesn't say much for the reliability of their product if it's down all the time.

the boom is so long it looks like if it were turned north it would nearly bash right into the Federal Office Building.

Obnoxiously Long? It's only that long because that's what's needed to do the job!
