Has anyone realized yet that we really don't know what this will look like, when finished, during the night time? Will there be external lights shining on it, or will it be entirely lit from the inside? If anyone can find a night time rendering I would greatly appreciate it.

http://static1.businessinsider.com/i...tion_night.jpg That image is a poor representation of the actual lighting scheme and looks very CGI to me.

From the inside, there is a bulb between each portal located next to the marble benches at ground level. I don't know if Westfield requested modifications to the lighting scheme.

Maybe kids see it as a beautiful alien dinosaur skeleton! Too bad it is to be caged between skyscrapers.

no, they account for it in the design of the crane and its foundations.

governing load case should be a 100+mph tail wind iirc.

That said, and just as a reminder of the realities of human fallibility, here's one of the more terrifying sights I've ever looked out my window to see...I live on East 57th Street - this was the crane at One57 on October 30, 2012, during hurricane Sandy...:

Winds should not be as bad as Sandy (max gust should be 60-70mph) and the crane is not 1000' up in the air as it was the case for 57th street.

That being said it is a pretty serious storm and snow and ice will make it worse...

cranes like these are usually left to weathervane with the wind during storms. the crane on One57 failed because it was locked into position and the wind blew the boom back over the superstructure.

They still use wooden beems for that? That doesn't seem very future proof.

The word you were looking for would be ties and no it isn't very future looking, it is to give the rail's their shape until they're attached to the concrete sleeper

That tie spacing doesn't look like what they use for pre-concrete sleeper installations! It definitely looks like those are going to be part of the final installation. You can even see that under the Crane they have already put in the ballast leaving the wood ties in place!
