Ya seriously there's a reason that Amtrak Still has Coaches from the 1940s that they use in regular passenger service. And the MTA still brings out their Original subway cars that NYC Subway used when they first opened for special occasions & the R32s on that are used for the C-train are from 1964 and their retirement has been deferred multiple times because of how easy they have been to maintain and how well they were built.

Isn't this a mockup segment which used to stay an NE corner of the construction site for a long time? I saw it been lifted in the morning couple days ago but I didn't see where they put it.

^Those are the skylight rails which will allow the panels to slide in through.

The mock-up displayed a section of the maintenance catwalk and rain screens, which would cover the mechanical system of skylight atop of each of the fixed arches. It could be the mock-up section previously displayed at the NE corner is the same as this one. I don't know.

This was another mockup of the curtain wall envelope details at the portal pockets and below the fixed arch.

Tower 2 entrance

There are doors on the south side. I can't imagine they'll be open until/unless they build a covered walkway?

The skylight opens?!?! I didn't know. How many pigeons will get in this way? Will there be pigeon poo everywhere? Will they be trapped when the skylight closes?

The mechanism seem a little complex as well. If it breaks down on a spot, will the whole system shot down?

It will open on very special occasions, weather permitting. Skylight glass is formed by smaller modules that can operate independently.

They are at least installing the operating mechanisms like planned. Now whether they ever open and close the skylights will be another matter. They probably will for the first year or so until something breaks and then they will just leave them closed permanently. They are so far away from everything they look rather useless anyway.

My idee is they need to be operational in case of fire for the sake of smoke-evacuation

They do look rather complicated, with every pane appearing to require a mechanism. I too speculate that eventually it will break and be left permanently closed. Or that some other issue will make opening it not worthwhile.

I would love to be wrong though. It's just that t plays out that way so often. Stadiums with retractable domes, windows on historic buildings, transom windows above doors, etc. It seems that cool architectural windows are the first to get axed when belts are tightened.
