This diagram helps a lot.

But how are the plywood floor sections supported ?
And how are they raised from below ?
It's an interesting discussion and a worthy one, but as another poster said, it ought to be moved to the 3WTC thread. This one is for the Transit Hub.

it looks like the entrances are getting close. They cleared out the 2 WTC entrance. You can now see the escalators and they are running. It seems as though we are close. They were again today testing the fire alarm. Usually that means they are very close. I just wish someone could find out. Would love to go the day it opens!!!

Skylights to Open Every September 11
• The backbone of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub (a.k.a. the Oculus) is one long retractable skylight. Is it really possible, as the New York Times article implies, that all that money was spent on it just to open it once a year? “Each Sept. 11, the skylight will be opened to the elements for 102 minutes, Erica Dumas, a spokeswoman for the authority, said. That is how long the 2001 terrorist attack lasted.” Because nothing pays respect quite like letting fresh air into a mall. (Photo courtesy WTCProgress.)

To be honest, it's kind of bullshit it will only open once a year.

I wouldn't be upset if it never did.
We'll just end up with birds, and the possibility that it could get stuck.

I can just see the headlines, now...

Agreed! Seems like an awfully complex and expensive mechanism for using once a year.

Speaking of which, will there be a bunch of guys crawling around the outside of the oculus, polishing the glass every 5 minutes so dirt, leaves & bird poop won't accumulate?

I assume it will be scalable, so that can be cleaned just as the glass on the sides of the structure \_(ツ)_/

The retractable skylight is an elegant solution for smoke-evacuation in case of fire. The common solution would look more like this

Of course it will always be pouring rain on September 11 when they open the skylights! The entire idea of opening skylights in this building is rather absurd and an awful lot of money for very little gain.

In the case of fire, I would think they would NOT want to let air in to feed the fire
