True, but there aren't any homes with this much marble! Combining the quality and quantity they have a fortune tied up in marble alone for this project.

The reason why marble is so expensive in the US is because of the retailers. Marble is expensive but not as much as you think.

If they've spent more than a billion on this project, why not finish it with the best finishes?

this building is amazing, its design may not be appealing for everyone but everybody should accept this is a piece of art and craftmanship, I mean, look at that steel work and marble moldings and smoth finish exposed curved concrete. I can't think of any other building as complicated as this that has been built in the last 2 decades all around the world

I find it cold, dark, uninviting. The times I've been there I've never found it beautiful, just dank.

It's Official: WTC Oculus Will Open the First Week in March

http://ny.curbed.com/archives/2016/0...k_in_march.php

Quote:
Sure, the news was all but confirmed, but today the Port Authority made it official: The transit org announced that the World Trade Center Transportation Hub—anchored by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava's Oculus—will officially open in "the first week of March," per a press release.

In a statement, Port Authority chairman John Degan said, "When the Oculus opens, commuters, visitors and residents of Lower Manhattan will have a greatly enhanced commute to and from the site for the first time." What that actually means for commuters: There will finally be a link between the World Trade Center PATH station and 11 NYC subway lines, along with the East River ferries. The various stations will be linked via underground passageways, which will also connect to the mall beneath the Oculus, which are scheduled to open "in phases" this year, per the Port Authority.

Take note: the PA press release says the oculus will eventually connect up with the subway lines. Wonder what we get day one.

You will be able to walk into and through the Oculus in March. The grandest space will open to the public. The mall will take longer as the tenants have not moved into their spaces yet. They haven't even finished building their spaces in the long completed underground concourse to the WFC yet! At least the main spaces will open to access the PATH trains.

This thing really needs another coat of paint. The color differences between different sections are very noticeable under the right lighting, especially at the abutments. And the obvious weld lines detract from what is supposed to be the appearance of a single flowing structure.
