I hope they preserve at least some of that area from the Temporary PATH escalators to put underground concourse access points for the Performing Arts Center.

It looks like there's plenty of room for at least a few escalator/stairs and some elevator banks.

I seem to recall that that escalator bank was landmark of the old station and that its reopening was a cause for celebration. If so, they would be fools not to leave it.

That might actually have been when the first temporary PATH station opened. The bank of escalators leading from the entrance on Church St. was situated pretty close to the set in the original WTC complex -- known by some as "The Hill". The proximity was similar enough that it was actually slightly eerie using that station the one time I did. Of course, those escalators would eventually be dismantled for the set shown in the picture off of Vesey St., since the station platforms were rebuilt slightly to the west. (Was the hill "moved" a second time? I know there was second temporary entrance on Church St. built just to the south of the first one, before the one on Vesey St. was built.)

The incarnations of the hill could very well have been the largest continuous, side-by-side bank of escalators in the world. I wonder if the record is now at the Brookfield Place entrance with 6? The most I've seen anywhere else is 5; one such installation is/was at Port Authority Bus Terminal.

I think the hill at Vesey St. had longer escalators than the original (or its first replacement?), since they went all the way from street level to the PATH mezzanine. I'm pretty sure that at the original WTC, you had to descend a short flight of stairs from street level to get there, then, at the bottom, there was another short descent to get to the mezz. The latter drop had only 2 escalators, located along the edges of the wide stairway, I think.

Does anyone know when the entrances to the R/W and the E are going to open. I heard by the end of the year.

For some time now, from the webcam, there appears to be black matts covering the half circle of marble at the east surface entrance to the Oculous. Is that because the marble is too slippery?

The true and only original was damaged beyond repair on 9/11, so nothing of value was lost with the demolitions of the temporary terminals. If you fancy giant escalator banks, we now have a beautiful (if leaky) new replacement for the North Bridge to the WFC (with would-be escalators #7 and #8 taking the forms of two elevators instead). Personally, I believe that the middle two escalators should have reached the top of the grand staircase. It would have looked and functioned better (access to the second floor of the WFC is a bottleneck as it is).

You'd think, wouldn't you? For some ridiculous reason, a direct connection to the shopping concourse doesn't appear in the plans. Its absence might have to do with the VSC infrastructure directly beneath it. Still, they should have made provisions for a simple connection.

One of the two (E) connections will open on December 19th (the original one, stemming from the northeast corner of the Oculus on the balcony level, not the one in 2WTC, which has a long way to go):

Quote:
From the PATH, passengers would walk up the steps to the Oculus and then take an escalator to the second level. The passageway to the E is in the northeast corner, near Tower 2, officials said.

Let's hope that the two remaining (R)(W) entrances open soon...

It looks so iconic!
Off-topic: I'll be visiting The States during the summer. I'll see the WTC and Calatrava's Oculus for the first time. I'll see the city that I've only seen in movies before. I'm super excited, first time in The States after 21 year on the south of Europe.

Will the ocolus plaza get any beautification like greenery, trees, benches and such? Because currently it just looks very dull and unpleasant.

It was in the plans, because in so many renders we could see trees lining the plaza, maybe it's too early for such stuff, because the second tower isn't started, or there might be another reason I don't know.

There are trees on the south plaza between the Oculus and 3 WTC but I'm not sure why there aren't any on the north plaza. I know Westfield plans to ultimately use the space for outdoor summer concerts and special events so that could be why. Hopefully they at least add some concrete planters or something.

It looks like they're preserving a section of the original mall:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BEIWvF25JU

It seems a bit ridiculous to encase one of the doors in a display just because a rescue worker spray-painted a few numbers on it two days after 9/11. If you really care so much about it, remove the pane and install it in the museum so we can have a functioning door.

Now we'll have to ascend and then descend to reach the mall, but it's not a big deal. The preservation is a nice touch.

Here's what that section used to look like (note the differences from the "preserved" version):
