Huge steel on the east and west end of the oculus substructure, will these parts carry most of the load of the above-ground structure? Also lots of pouring in the level below street level the last weeks. Still no info which crane(s) will erect the oculus?

I live near Valencia , where Calatrava has made a lot of buildings and bridges, including Prince Felipe's Museum of Arts, which is very similar to the transportation hub in some parts, and the structure is made of some kind of concrete with a white cover. I think the transportation hub will be very similar to these buildings... Just for making an idea of how will look like take this photo of the interior as an example:

Seems like there isn't much more heavy work for the favco's if the wings are the next main pieces to be installed. And they also took away the old crane pad that is to the north of the unloading ramp.

i would bet on not seeing alot happen visually for a while.

they likely have to weld the hell out of the entire thing, hence all the coverings

Not just welding, but they have (literally) tons of rebar and concrete to pour.

I was wondering about that too. On those wind tunnel models, the spines are much longer on one side. Will the longer or shorter overhang be on the street side?

Yes the north rafters are larger than the south ones, this because the south ones can't extend more due to the proximity of Tower Three.

Hole in the deck of the utility vault at east end of the hub.

This morning, I noticed there is a long, irregular hole in the deck of the utility vault at the east end of the Hub. To me, it looks like the weight of the rebar that was stored on that temporary platform they just dismantled was too much for the deck to support and the deck cracked.

A failure such as that would explain the frantic redistribution of the rebar recently, and the construction of the security barrier around the site of the storage platform.

Does anybody have any information on what is happening in this area?

right.

and I am sure that there are design elements that require a certain amount of completion in all of that prior to erecting the calatrava due to its cantilevered nature.

Don't worry about it, it's just the angle of the picture that might have made you think that there is a problem. They're dismantling the platform because they don't need it anymore.

Take a look at the picture below to see how messy things are under there :

Maybe. But that hole wasn't there a few days ago. And it is definitely in the deck below where the platform was.

You are just seening the space between the new wall and old structure. The space has been there since the Oculus wall was built. They need to fill the void and reprofile the area so that the road/alley can be built.

I don't like the last one at all. Looks too wiry and seems smaller.

Does this mean that the old WTC Mall entrance to the E train will not be preserved?

At the ground level? On the level below they already poured a lot, but the first patch on ground level (in the NE area of the hub) looks like almost ready to be poured, maybe already this week, maybe next..
