Still about 10 months away . Rafters are placed at last and will be erected from smallest to largest.

Erection of the lower portal frames was suspended last days because of rain. Work will resume after New Year.

Despite being Christmas Eve, there are plenty of workers on site this morning and it appears they may be getting ready to place another piece.

I see a ladder truck, ambulance, staff truck, and pumper on site with a hose pulled. I hope all is OK.

It looks like if there are already 2 parts in place. If you check the KPI cam you can see some white parts sticking out. That makes the total of 12.

Are there two more portal frames on site, or were they stacked, and now not stacked?

Beber, thanks for the info on the fire.

And thankfully, nobody was hurt.

One of ten already in place, looks like the western crane lifted it.

So that's should be the 3rd overall, as two were already in place since last week

Snow on site... pretty dangerous to work under those conditions.

First steel beam placed for World Trade Center Oculus project

Quote:
Last week in New York City, Skanska Koch placed the first steel beam for the dramatic Oculus building that will be the centerpiece of the World Trade Center Transportation Hub. We have a $204 million contract to erect the Oculus, designed by architect Santiago Calatrava.

The first beam – called a sub portal – weighed approximately 15,000 lbs. Next to each sub portal there will be an alternate piece called a lower portal, which will each weigh between 26,000 lbs. and 34,000 lbs. The sub portals and lower portals will alternate each other; this pattern will form the Oculus’ unique shape that is similar to a bird in flight.

To place the Oculus’ roughly 11,000 tons of structural steel – all being fabricated in Italy – Koch has erected two specialized tower cranes custom made for this project. The completed structure will stand 150 feet at its highest point.

The steel and glass Oculus structure will bring natural light to the 300,000-SF center hall concourse that includes a balcony walkaway above, similar to Grand Central Station.

Also on the World Trade Center site, USA Civil and USA Building are reconstructing the PATH Hall train station under a separate contract worth more than $600 million; the Oculus will be the top portion of the train station.

Each of the lower portals and subportals are diferent, even though they look identical.

Lower portals are in blue, subportals on red.
