Woooow! I forgot how majestic the top structure will look like. I cannot imagine what the construction of that would look like from the Earthcam cameras! But man, I cannot wait.

When should we see the above-ground "wings" begin to be installed? It looks like they are almost done with the below grade section of the hub construction.

Dearest Otie,

The answer to this question will always be: yes.

It looks like they finished welding the southeast staircase. It's fully uncovered now.

Yep, Otie is the real deal. I could never do what he's doing with the hub. He has a link to a thread following his model in his signature. Also, let it be known that I too want to see more. He could get away with posting an entire page of renders, and he's just getting started.

Is it me, or are they removing some of the large lower portal components? There had been two pieces within the chasm which is the Hub oculus, but there are now 4...

I would not be inconceivable that they are fine tuning the fit. This whole thing is so complex that I imagine even the slightest misalignment now could turn into a major cluster later when windows don't line up or the arch is too short or long to ad the next section. It was mentioned earlier that the reason for the slowdown in the last month was caused by misalignment in the field at the east and west ends.

Still the same problem, hoping they get them right by the coming days to start with abutment erection. Bolting of lower/sub portal members is in progress with 26/98 complete, Skanska is also erecting Calatrava columns at the retail concourse between T3 and T4.

Although the Oculus structure is complex, its not that difficult to understand the geometry rules and patterns, but man you gotta have enough patience to get every single piece modified for accuracy.

Thanks for the interest, folks. I'm working hard to provide some nice renderings of abutment areas. I don't think there's a rendering out there that depicts accurately the current design, not even dbox visuals.

Here's a sample render of the type of pavers being used at the Oculus plaza, most of them will be Mesabi black granite, while the trench lines will be formed with white/gray Woodbury gem 8 granite.

Paving stone at WTC Oculus Plaza by Otie O'Daniel, on Flickr

Here's the list of pavers being used (all of them have a thickness of 3")

8'3" x 5"0" Mesabi black (thermal finish)
5'0" x 2'6" Mesabi black (thermal finish)
3'0" x 1'6" Mesabi black (thermal finish)
2'0" x 1'0" Mesabi black (thermal finish)
3'0" x 1'0" Woodbury (GEM 8 type)

Stairs, seat walls, planters and stair treads will also be Mesabi black, there's a 5" wide halo surrounding the Oculus outline, but I'm not sure what type of granite they're using. Oh and we're getting some flagpoles at the northeast corner of the plaza!!

I think its for the abutments look at the east side. on either side of the future door there are black steel pieces that have been attached to what look like bolts embedded in the concrete. The west side looks ready to receive its own pair. I wonder if these are what Ottie was calling Calatrava Columns.

Ok, so here's one for you: What are the two large, curved, cage-like structures sitting near the SE corner?

I'm thinking that the two large, curved, cage-like structures sitting near the SE corner are frames for tent-like structures.
