Abandoned Industrial Northeast

Abandoned Industrial Northeast

Greetings! This thread is dedicated to the industrial heritage of the Northeast and the remains of a once proud, glorious industrial era. Many of the ghosts of factories, power plants and mills still remain to be explored and appreciated, even as they slowy return to nature. So enjoy!

Bethlehem Steel Mill Lackawanna NY

After purchasing the Lackawanna Steel Company in 1922, Bethlehem Steel expanded this steelmill just south of Buffalo NY to become one of the largest in the world. At its peak, the mill employed 20,000 workers. After a decade of severe decline, the mill was closed in 1982 and much of it was dismantled.

Philadelphia Electric Company Richmond Station power plant, Philadelphia

THE HISTORY (in brief): Located along the banks of the Delaware River at Delaware Avenue and Lewis Street in Philadelphia, the Richmond Power Station is a monument to the production and marketing of electricity in the early twentieth century. Designed for the Philadelphia Electric Company by architect John Windrim and engineer William C.L. Eglin, the coal-fired electrical generation plant was placed into service in 1925.

The station's Neo-classical Revival design was used by the company to reflect permanence, stability and responsibility in the face of considerable public scrutiny directed at electric utilities at the time. The station was also a technological marvel, housing the world's largest Westinghouse turbo-generator added in 1935 to supply current to the newly completed electrification of the Pennsylvania Railroad from New York to Washington. In addition to its grand exterior, the station's interior is defined by massive open spaces, which include the cavernous Turbine Hall, illuminated with curved skylights along the cruciform ceiling 130 feet above the floor.

After 60 years of operation, the station was taken off line in 1985. Although the transformers on the 15-acre site remain in use, the station continues to stand empty and deteriorate, especially the framework for the vaulted ceiling.

Ashley Huber Coal Breaker

This massive colliery in Ashley PA was built on the site of the "Maxwell 20" coal breaker in 1938. It processed coal until its closure in 1976 amid changing market conditions. It's fate is uncertain but local preservationists hope to save it.

I remember taking the bus up the Turnpike to New York City, and passing this old brick industrial building as we crossed the Passaic River near Newark. Maybe someone can tell me what this building is from, since this seems like a good place.

Bird's Eye View, or at least I hope so

A power plant or substation idk , probably will be destroyed later this decade as part of Newark's Redevelopment plans.

Armorcast Birdsboro Steel Mill, Birdsboro PA

Originally founded in 1740, the Birdsboro Steel Foundry was expanded during WW2 and converted to tank production under its new name, Armorcast. Following the Korean War, the plant struggled to win defense business and was finally closed in 1988.

Wow, beautiful pictures. Can that factory in Yonkers be legally explored? I'd love to go up there.

Be careful. Most of these sites are either fenced in or patrolled and anyone sneaking in could be held for trespassing. Not to mention the dangerous debris and asbestos. The Glenwood Power plant in Yonkers has been explored a lot but I think it's very illegal at the moment. Some places offer tours, usually to the press. Such is the case with the Domino Sugar factory in Brooklyn and parts of the Brooklyn Navy Yard

I see. Well, I've gotten enough trespassing tickets as it is.

There's something very beautiful about the classical architecture and design of some these factories. At the same time, it's equally just as sad to see them abandoned like that. It's oddly attractive.

Westport Power Plant "The 12 Monkeys Plant"

Built in 1906, this coal-fired power plant in Baltimore was the largest reinforced concrete structure in the world when it opened. The plant served Baltimore Gas and Electric customers until its closing in 1993. It was famously used for scenes in the film 12 Monkeys in 1995.

Philadelphia Electric Company Delaware River Power Station

The PECO Delaware River Power Station opened in 1917 on the Delaware River, Fishtown-Kensington area. At its peak, the plant’s boilers burned 325 tons of coal per hour. A massive clam-shell crane, mounted on a tower projecting into the Delaware River, hoisted coal from barges moored at its base and into the plant’s bunkers. The turbines generated enough power to light up most of northeastern Philadelphia. They fell silent in 1984. Demolition is planned for the abandoned plant in spite of preservation efforts.

Carrie Furnace ~ Rankin PA

A long abandoned blast furnace. The plant, built by US Steel in 1907 with an addition in 1941 to supply the Homestead Steel Mill with molten iron, was largely demolished in the 1980s. Only the original furnaces from 1907 survive.
