Saba, the Unspoiled Queen of the Carribean

Saba is the smallest island of the Netherlands Antilles. Yet it features the highest point of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the potentially active volcano Mount Scenery (877 m). It is slated to become a municipality of the Netherlands proper on 10 October 2010, on which date the Netherlands Antilles are to be dissolved.

The scenery is quite stunning, and the island has not been affected too much by tourism, leading people to call it the Unspoiled Queen of the Caribbean. I leave it to you guys to decide whether it deserves this attribution.

To orient ourselves a bit, here's a map of Saba's vicinity:

The following pictures are not mine. They are taken bij peacenik, who published them under the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-Share Alike 2.0 Generics, which basically means that I can publish them here if I give him the credits.

8. There's one road on Saba, aptly called "The Road", which was masterminded by Josephus Lambert Hassell who, despite the common opinion of Dutch and Swiss engineers, believed that a road could be built on the island (click here for larger image)

9. The Road again (click here for larger image)

10. Driving Saba's Road is not for pussies. Up until the early nineties, taking a driving exam on Saba was the easiest way to get a Dutch driver's licence. The exam usually consisted of driving a few metres on The Road.

12. Saba's Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport is situated on the only piece of flat land on Saba. It has one of the shortest and most dangerous runways in the world, only amounting to 400 metres. The airport is closed to civil aviation (marked by a big X on the runway), but airlines are able to land there by obtaining waivers from the Netherlands Antilles' Civil Aviation Authority. The only airline flying to Saba is WinAir.

Winair Flight 401 takes off from runway 12 in Saba, Netherlands Antilles (SAB / TNCS) on 29 September 2007. The runway in Saba is only 1250 feet long and has steep cliffs on each end. As you land on runway 12, you have to watch out for the mountain; which is about 50 yards off your starboard wing!

Ladder Bay. Before the construction of the road to Fort Bay, all goods had to be brought to the island using this 800 step "ladder". On top is the Old Customs House (c) Sailing Nomad

There's only one real Gas Station on Saba, and this is it. There's kind of another gas station about 300 yards away, but it seems like it is only for construction vehicles and it was closed when we went there. (c) DoomaDooma

About 2,000 inhabitants. Quite densely populated if you take into account the roughness of the terrain.
